I love how I get absolutely terrified of going to my committee meetings, but every time I've had one it's been a positive experience. You'd think I'd learn to not be scared of them anymore, but I'm pretty sure my habituation circuitry is a little "off" haha

This tweet is 90% a joke, but I have a strong startle response to literally every unexpected noise. @GranatoLab I wonder what genes I'm mutant for- I'm like the fish in your behavior assays

I'm begging seminar speakers, and science presenters in general, to make use of summarizing models, not just at the end of their whole talk, but as they finish each kind of "topic" or point they are making before moving on to new stuff. Show me what your data MEANS.

Posting a little bit of #sciart this afternoon. Here's a graphical fig I made for my most recent review, showing how the repulsive Robo receptor is regulated in the developing fruit fly nerve cord and mouse spinal cord as axons cross the midline. Hand drawn using procreate.

I love procreate since it's super intuitive for ppl like myself, who have more of a traditional art background. Making super clean graphics doesn't feel too different from doodling!

Anyway, there is something super satisfying about condensing a whole bunch of scientific research into a concise informational image.

Finally out! Work funded by @CIHR_IRSC @AlzCanada Lots of work needed to determine if it works in human cells, but this is a first step in identifying a potential therapeutic factor for tauopathies. Short thread ⬇️ science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

I'm finally putting in an earnest effort to writing the intro of my main grad school manuscript, please clap.

Lovely PhD's of Twitter, I have a question for you. After much introspection, I'm certain that the professor life wouldn't be the ideal path for me so I'm going to eventually pick something "alt" for my carreer path. On the fence about if I want to do post-doc. Should I? Y/N

There is part of me that wants to do another stint of academic science where I go in with more knowledge/confidence than when I started my PhD, and unencumbered by the mental health issues that plagued me in grad school that FINALLY seem to have been resolved.

At the same time, I don't want to fall into the "overqualified" trap. Or seem like the only reason I apply to medcomm/industry is because I "flunked out" of academia when I never intended to stay after the possible post doc.
Also- seems like a decent chance to get more industry relatable skills, whether it's techniques (FACs, dealing with a gazillion cell lines at a time, other assays) or knowledge of a more disease relevant question.

Asked the lab 8ball if my quick change pcr would work this time and here's what she said. Feeling hopeful

CW: medical racism and human experimentation I was today years old when i learned that UPenn conducted a variety of experiments on (majority Black) people incarcerated in a Philly area prison.

Anyway, long story short, medicine and science both have such sketchy histories in the ethics department, especially regarding matters of race. While there is infrastructure in place to prevent stuff like this from happening now, we literally will always need to contend w this

I'm lucky that the majority of STEM ppl I'm personally friends with are some of the MOST ethically minded people I know. But I also know there are several who don't think about ethics/human condition/justice etc. STEM ppl develop a sense of ethics 2022 plz
