Our new paper is out!
How does the brain learn patterns hidden in noise? Using MEG, we found two mechanisms unfolding in order:
1️⃣ predictive activity (up to 500ms before a stimulus)
2️⃣ behavioral gains
3️⃣ slow representational change that tracks learning

🎇 Good news! 🎇 The kind people at @BBSJournal have made the new collection on "Conscious AI and biological naturalism" completely #OpenAccess for a limited period. This include the target article, all 50 commentaries (many of which disagree with me), and my response. Go to the link and click 'save pdf': DOI.org/10.1017/S0140525X250…

New paper! We developed a new paradigm combining statistical learning with the Flanker task. Hidden predictability reduced conflict costs, while statistical learning was stronger under conflict. Learning and cognitive control interact in real time.

Why are younger children so good at learning new skills?
One reason may be that they are better at a fundamental mechanism: statistical learning.
We followed the same children from age 7 to 14 and found that this learning gradually decreases with age.

Are the fundamental building blocks of cognition gender-neutral?
Our new paper suggests they are: implicit statistical learning, a core mechanism of predictive cognition, is remarkably similar in women and men.

🚨🔬 Announcing Sim2Science @NeurIPSConf 🔬🚨
Very excited to announce @simtoscience: ML with Imperfect Scientific Models
Simulators such as AlphaFold, VASP, and JOREK underpin most of modern science, but how do we work with them?
We'll be answering that this December with @SantiagoACadena, @pcastr, @cosmo_shirley, @jonkhler, and Petros Koumoutsakos of @Harvard.

What if depression isn’t just a mood disorder, but a disorder of prediction? 🧠 New research highlights how EEG reveals rigid belief updating in depression—where positive information is registered by the brain, but carries too little weight to revise expectations about the self and world. cell.com/trends/neuroscience…

How to Use Mind-Wandering for a Better Brain - Jonathan Schooler, Ph.D. - #607 blog.bulletproof.com/jonatha… via @bpnutrition
Our new paper out! In our study, statistical learning and cognitive flexibility showed a trade-off, but this link weakened as obsessive–compulsive tendencies increased. OC traits may reshape the balance between automatic learning and flexible control.

What happens to your memories when your entire brain turns to liquid soup? Here is a quick editorial summary of Dr. Michael Levin’s mind-bending work: inside the chrysalis, a caterpillar’s brain completely dissolves and rebuilds from scratch to become a butterfly. Yet, tests show the butterfly still retains the memories it learned as a caterpillar.
If a mind can survive its physical hardware being liquefied and entirely remolded, memory is clearly doing more than just sitting on a neural "hard drive."
So, where is that data actually stored?

New preprint! Children often beat adults at learning hidden patterns. Using eyetracking & a method we built in eLife(Hann 2026), we found the edge is not better error detection. It is flexibility: kids update their beliefs, adults cling to old predictions.

Physicians, since the medieval ages, have also become worse at using cast iron bone saws and herbal remedies. That's a good thing. Using advanced tools for helping humans is a good thing.
PS: I also think keeping humans in the loop is essential. We can combine our skills with AI
Studies suggests that reliance on AI tools degrades the abilities of physicians and software engineers:
The physicians, who had all performed at least 2,000 colonoscopies during their careers, were given access to an AI system that analyses colonoscopy images in real time and flags a type of precancerous intestinal lesion called an adenoma. The tool was available to the specialists on some days but not on others.
Once physicians began using it, their performance dropped significantly whenever the system was unavailable.
