As The Wiz turns 48, here’s what Michael saw in the Scarecrow: ā€œI auditioned for the part of the Scarecrow because I thought his character best fit my style.ā€ But Michael saw more in the Scarecrow than a character that suited his style. ā€œEverybody thinks he’s very special, but, really, he’s very sad. He’s so, so sad. Do you understand his sadness?ā€ Michael loved the Scarecrow since childhood. In 1978, he said: ā€œI always fell in love with the scarecrow. I think most kids do ’cause you feel sorry for him and everything and his character, and I always watched him.ā€ The Scarecrow thinks he has no brain, even though he keeps coming up with clever ideas. The crows keep telling him he’s stupid until he starts believing them. Michael once said, ā€œTell a lie long enough, people believe.ā€ It’s hard not to think of the Scarecrow when you hear that. He’s judged by what others tell him he is, not by what he actually is. Michael knew what it was like to have people believe things about him that had little to do with the person he really was. In a 1977 conversation with Timothy White, Michael explained what he saw in the character: ā€œThere are so many smart people walking around that don’t know they’re smart, don’t believe in themselves.ā€ He went on to explain that the Scarecrow is a smart guy who simply doesn’t realize it. The brain he thinks he’s missing has been there all along. Years later, while chatting with Brett Ratner in 2004, Michael put it this way: ā€œI don’t care if the whole world is against you or teasing you or saying you’re not gonna make it. Believe in yourself. No matter what.ā€ šŸ’«

John Branca needs to go. It’s so infuriating to feel so powerless, knowing there’s nothing we can do. This man has been managing Michael’s estate for 17 years, and who knows how much longer he’ll remain the executor. He has Michael’s costumes and other personal items in his own home, was involved in negotiations to secure a position at Sony, and is in charge of all of Michael’s assets and the money Michael continues to generate. Oh boy, I have so much to say, and I’m absolutely furious. Don’t forget what Michael really thought of Branca when Michael 2 comes out.

30 years of Ghosts and it still stands as THEE most ambitious thing Michael ever created. The gothic visuals and camera work felt like it was made for the cinema. The effects were years ahead of their time for a music video from Michael pulling his own face apart to morphing into 5 different character. Spending multiple hours in heavy prosthetics to become characters that are almost unrecognisable as him. The story outlines his life and feelings at that time, an outsider being driven out by a town that refuses to understand him. Three decades on, the visuals, the choreography and the insane level of craft behind it still hold up as a true cinematic masterpiece that I will NEVER shut up abt.

these were actually synth strings. michael wanted to use new technology to create sounds that had never been heard before while quincy wanted to use live instruments. i get michael’s vision but i can’t help wondering what this track would’ve sounded like with real strings.
Omg the strings in Speed Demon, this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard

48 years ago today, a 20 year old Michael Jackson debuted on the big screen as the Scarecrow in The Wiz, and the role fit him like the newspaper he was stuffed with. Behind the heavy makeup and ragtag costume, MJ brought a loose, bone free physicality and warmth that critics singled out amid the film’s mixed reception. His vocals and moves on ā€œYou Can’t Win,ā€ and ā€œEase on Down the Roadā€ already hinted at the isolation pops, fluid control and emotional vulnerability that would continue to define his stage presence. It was also the set where he first crossed paths with Quincy Jones and their partnership would go on to reshape music. Enjoy some of MJ’s best moments and scenes as the Scarecrow that has endured as the clear standout and favorite šŸŒ¾šŸ‘‘ ✨
