Hip hop journalist Justin Hunte suggests that the XXL Freshman cypher format is outdated and certain artists should not be doing cyphers on the platform:
“Ian, Lazer Dim 700, 1900 Rugrat…Those are vibes, get lit rappers. It’s not about bars. You have these artists in a cypher…I don’t think [these] artists are best highlighted in that format…They’re better off showing lifestyle [or] how they made a song.”
