"Each day felt like it could be our last, and it came with terrible memories that left unbearable wounds. For three months, we endured unimaginable horrors that will stay with us forever. Despite everything that we went through, we never lost hope #Kwibuka31

During the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, she lost many of members of her family. In November 2001, Dafroza, together with her husband Alain Gauthier, co-founded ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘Ž (๐ถ๐‘ƒ๐ถ๐‘…), an organization that supports survivors and victimsโ€™ families in seeking justice and pursuing accountability for individuals suspected of participating in the Genocide against the Tutsi who settled in France. Through the CPCR, Dafroza and Alain Gauthier collected testimonies and evidence, worked with Genocide survivors, investigators, and French judicial authorities, and contributed to the prosecution of different alleged Genocide perpetrators in France. As her family, friends, and humanity mourn Dafrozaโ€™s passing, her life will continue to be celebrated as that of a voice who spoke for victims and a tireless woman who dedicated her life to seeking justice for the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. #DafrozaGauthier #JusticeForVictims #GenocideAgainstTheTutsi

On October 1, 1990, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and its armed wing, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), crossed the Uganda - Rwanda border at Kagitumba. This marked the beginning of the four-year war between the RPA and the The war followed more than three decades of Rwandan exile and refugee displacement dating back to the 1959 - 1962 refugee crisis. It was also shaped by unresolved questions of return, citizenship, and belonging across the Great Lakes region. These questions involved the local indigenous Kinyarwanda-speaking communities, also known as Banyarwanda, as well as Rwandan migrants, Rwandan refugees and their descendants in Rwandaโ€™s neighboring countries. Scholars such as Mahmood Mamdani place the RPFโ€™s 1990 armed return within this broader regional history. Today, October 1 is observed in Rwanda as Patriotic Day (๐‘ˆ๐‘š๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘– ๐‘ค๐‘œ ๐บ๐‘ข๐‘˜๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘Ž ๐ผ๐‘”๐‘–โ„Ž๐‘ข๐‘”๐‘ข), a national day of reflection on patriotism and the countryโ€™s history. UPDATE: Veteran BBC journalist Mark Doyle, who extensively covered the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, has died after a short illness. Doyle stayed in Rwanda for much of the 100 days of the Genocide, reporting from the country when many foreign journalists had left. He later reflected on his experience in โ€œReporting the Genocide,โ€ a chapter in the book The Media and the Rwanda Genocide.
