Digital equity in action.
Introducing CommuniFi: Building a free community WiFi network across Ottawa youtu.be/P7Y8cHRaCkc?si=dNhi… via @YouTube
CommuniFi is funded by CIRA and in partnership with Ottawa Community Housing and @hiboonetworks, a subsidiary of @hydroottawa.
Some members are reporting login issues this morning -- we're currently looking into it. Internet services do not seem to be affected.
In the meantime, you can still access your NCF Zimbra email by typing mail.ncf.ca into your URL.
Update: We have restored DSL connectivity. Apologies for the delays: we take our network uptime seriously & know how important reliable connectivity is.

If you're still not connected, try power-cycling your modem by unplugging it for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in again, even if you previously tried this without success. If you still have issues, please contact the HelpDesk at 613-721-1773 ext. 0 or [email protected] 2/3
Many of our DSL members are currently out of service due to a network issue: apologies. We are looking into it and hope to resolve it as soon as we can. We will keep you posted as we know more.

Fibre optic internet technology has revolutionized connectivity, and here in Canada, it's also helping bridge the digital divide! In Ottawa, the National Capital FreeNet (@ncfottawa) is making waves with its Community WiFi project, in partnership with our friends at CIRA (@ciranews). By leveraging fibre connections from Hiboo Networks, Ottawa-Gatineau's first municipally owned fibre optic-based telecom provider, this pilot project provides free internet access to underserved communities, supporting thousands of individuals living in Ottawa Community Housing. This initiative complements CIRA's annual Net Good Grants program which provides millions of dollars in funding to community-led projects that address digital challenges in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities across Canada. We're excited to be at the stage of our free Community WiFi Network build where the @OCH_LCO buildings at 251 & 255 Donald have started testing free WiFi in their common spaces! Now we're thinking about other community orgs we can connect within a 2-5km range...
But why did we pick such a cold day to test the signal range!?
Thanks as always to our community partners: @ciranews for the funding and other support, @OCH_LCO and @hiboonetworks.
