What Pathways Do Households Use to Access Essential Services?
Drawing on NCAER’s India Human Development Survey (IHDS-II) data, recent research examines how urban households leverage different forms of social networks to access essential services under varying housing conditions. The study explores the role of both patronage-based relationships and collective-action networks in helping households navigate challenges related to service provision. The findings indicate that households experiencing greater material precarity and poorer housing conditions are more likely to rely on both patronage and collective-action mechanisms to secure access to basic services.

What Role Does Irrigation Play in Shaping Household Diets?
Using NCAER’s India Human Development Survey (IHDS-II) data, recent research explores irrigation as a potential pathway linking agricultural inputs with household nutrition. The study examines whether improved access to irrigation contributes to better food consumption patterns and enhanced dietary quality among farming households. The findings suggest that while irrigation can increase agricultural productivity and household incomes, greater access to irrigation does not automatically translate into more diverse or nutritious diets.

The first examines the relationship between irrigation, food consumption, and diet quality among farming households, highlighting the role of irrigation in shaping nutritional outcomes. The second explores how housing conditions influence the use of patronage and collective-action networks for accessing basic services. Together, these studies provide valuable insights into the ways in which socioeconomic and material conditions intersect with access to services, resources, and overall household well-being.
