By all means, please do judge my book by its cover. Coming out with @stanfordpress on January 16, 2024. Use "GILL20" for 20% off from sup.org/books/title/?id=3538…

Hope that all this talk around 'affordability' (or even 'economic populism') actually translates into a class struggle to end exploitation, lest the right-wing take it up too...

Blatant corruption, but bound to backfire.
The Fresno Police Department falsely smeared an elected official just a week before the election and, yes, it is it as bad as it sounds: 1. Fresno PD pulled over Naindeep Singh for a pretext registration check and then accused him of driving under the influence of drugs. 2. Naindeep passed a breathalyzer test and volunteered to give blood/urine samples. 3. PD took him to the hospital and got the tests done. 4. Naindeep also had another urine test at the same hospital and the reports are negative for drugs. 5. Fresno PD and City leadership immediately ran to media and got wall-to-wall coverage that Naindeep was arrested for DUI. 6. Fresno PD refuses to release their own test results, saying it will take weeks. It is a violation of Naindeep's civil rights under the US and CA Constitution, particularly while votes are being cast, for Fresno PD to rush to publish the DUI investigation but not the test results that would exonerate him. City leadership could get those results in hours, just like Naindeep did. There are two things happening here. First, Naindeep has been running a progressive campaign that holds police and city leadership accountable for their failed policy agenda. Second, there is a widely opposed multi-billion dollar real estate development at risk if Naindeep is elected. The people of Fresno are rallying behind Naindeep and this will backfire against the City and Fresno PD. They have only made his voice louder and more powerful. Sikhs are in Chardi Kala and more motivated than ever to defeat corruption in Fresno.

We've been in extraordinary times for a century. "Forcing a private company to sell shares to the public as protection against a hypothetical financial crisis would be an extraordinary intervention, with few comparable precedents." archive.is/20261021091603/ht…

"The phenomenon branded by venture capitalists as ‘artificial intelligence’ should really be understood as material statistical patterning, dependent on an intensely resource-hungry machine process, and on expropriated human labour."

For all the truck driver veere. "Fundamentally, this is an extremely capitalist notion of time as purely a function of work, where even if you are not working, you are “re-charging” in anticipation of more work." theguardian.com/news/2026/se…

Jaggi's imprisonment without conviction - 2,888 days - has been longer than Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and nearly all of the Bhima Koregaon activists in the world's largest democracy.
After 9 years, Jagtar Singh Johal has walked out of prison on bail. This is significant for Jagtar, his family & the relentless #FreeJaggiNow campaign that refused to allow his case to be forgotten. Bail is not freedom, the objective has always been to bring him home to Scotland.

"'Going back' is not the rallying call we need. If these last months have taught us anything, it is that for Asian Americans, the answer cannot be to persuade the government that we remain the good immigrants whose belonging is contingent on our proximity to whiteness."
I never write anything personal so this was hard. It is about witnessing the attacks on immigrants in higher education & thinking about what I owe as someone whose father came here on a student visa that was made possible by the civil rights movement. aaup.org/precarities-collabo…

Honored to have this essay “Life Under the Algorithm” coauthored with Katie Wells in this Fall’s 🔥🔥🔥 issue of Dissent magazine. And the accompanying illustration by Ben Jones is really something to behold.
