has anyone told @Casablancas_J that in that part of liar's remorse where he says harmonic minor he should have said phrygian dominant? i mean far be it from me but...

The problem of our time is not merely information overload. It is that the time required to construct a coherent understanding of reality is becoming longer than the time during which that understanding remains valid.

To the extent that mathematics is getting mogged by AI goodharting, it’s because mathematics goodharted itself into this position by rewarding the solving of conjectures over understanding, exposition, and pretty much everything else.

Q: how should we think about the OpenAI 372 math problem solutions? A: research mathematics is an abelian sandpile exhibiting self-organized criticality. The OpenAI drop triggered a collapse to sub-criticality. Q: WTF??? A: explanation here: blog.danromik.com/the-abelia…

this is a post about academia
TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE is what you get during major troubles... The first type normalizes every development, thinking tomorrow will get better, everything will be restored to good times, ridicules those who warn against trouble... and get wrecked. The second type sees the dark cloud over the ocean developing and avoids that area well in advance... & survives:

you must become the storm
It's true, there is a bit of a monastic atmosphere about a lot of math departments. There was at University of Pennsylvania when I was a theoretical -math major back in the 1970s. I've been pretty brutal towards the faction of mathematicians that wants to reject OpenAI's findings because they "didn't ask for this work to be done". I won't apologize for slamming their sense of entitlement and their claim to own mathematics as though it were some kind of holy ground not to be desecrated by clankers. On the other hand, I have to say that I get it. When you're doing a thing that is so taxing that it demands complete concentration of the will - monastic devotion - it's easy to believe that people who don't partake of the discipline don't have the right to play where you do. I'm a software engineer at a level where that takes monastic devotion, too. Maybe not to the intensity that pure mathematics does, but - I too have felt some sadness and some sense of loss as the Singularity bulldozes assumptions about programming that have surrounded me for 50 years. And then the pragmatic part of me comes around and says "Yeah? Get over yourself. There's so much more we can *do* with the new tools..." So here I am, leaning into AI-assisted coding pretty hard. Embracing the storm. It will not defeat me. I will ride it, master it; I will become the storm. If you are in any knowledge-centered field, it's either embrace the storm or a collapse into stagnation and irrelevance as people with more courage and more flexibility power-zoom away from you, accelerating towards an unknown future. Software engineers mostly seem to be handling this pretty well. A minority of open-source projects are prohibiting AI assisted contribution. I am confident they will quickly become laughingstocks. I think and hope that most mathematicians, like most software engineers, are brave enough. Willing to bet there's an age split, too, with the younger ones much less fazed. And me? Old, but too stubborn to quit. I was a mathematician once myself, I published research. I guess my message for upset mathematicians is: don't take counsel of your fears. You can do this. Be too stubborn to give up.

congratulations anne carson, you splendid freak So what did he do? He gave out souvenir pumice and showed where the incandescence had brushed him I am a drop of gold he would say I am molten matter returned from the core of earth to tell you interior things--- Look! he would prick his thumb and press out ocher-colored drops that sizzled when they hit the plate--- Volcano blood! Claimed the temperature of his body was a continuous 130 degrees and let people touch his skin for 75 cents at the back of the tent. So you touched him? She paused. Let's say--- (from Autobiography of Red)

a defense industrialist named palmer luckey with a scheme to save the institution of marriage through chemically induced love - if lost please return to thomas pynchon
Palmer Luckey reveals the startup he'd build today: oxytocin doping to end divorce "I would try to end the tragedy of divorce with oxytocin doping for marriage counseling." "We understand mammal pair bonding pretty well. There's a lot of people who want to stay together. Most of the people who don't want to stay together should stay together, especially for their kids." "And we can, if people think SSRIs are fine, which they're not, but if they were, then oxytocin doping to stay together is definitely fine." "It's the mammal pair bonding chemical. There's things you can do to increase the uptake, and it's very well understood. Also, totally unregulated, which is great. Unregulated spaces are a lot easier to do. You can go buy a kilogram of oxytocin on Sigma Aldrich Chemical Supply right now, and if you do that, maybe you won't die alone." "It's pure biology. It's used for women who don't bond with their kids, and now for women who don't bond with their husbands. It's also used for kids with various neurological issues, some kids with autism who struggle with pair bonding." "The cool thing is it's a self-reinforcing loop. We understand that very well. Unlike most drugs, it doesn't form a chemical dependency. It actually unburdens you from a chemical dependency."
