The current pace of model deployment has indeed been terrifying to watch as a developmental cognitive scientist who cares deeply about safeguarding early life learning and optimizing models that future generations from all corners of society can harness as usable tools.
Read on for how I am thinking about slowing the pace of advancing AI systems using a developmental psychology toolkit…
To trust a model, I need an evaluator to test and interpret how its processes and competencies generate performance across many tasks. As we move toward personalized AI systems adapting to real users, we need models acquiring prosocial competencies coherently and in a way that we can trust. Before considering deployment, models need to align with the principles of logical reasoning that psychologists and philosophers have studied for ages. To start, we can use developmental psychology tasks to verify socially relevant competencies and hopefully slow the pace of capability improvement while prioritizing safety…

A wonderful collision of worlds 🤜🏾🤛🏾 The field of computational cognitive science has afforded rich advances thanks to well-designed AI systems; thrilled to see this fruitful construction of human-machine thought partnerships from a team of powerhouses :)

2 years ago, I had a few whiteboard sessions with @katie_m_collins on Bayesian approaches to human-machine teams. It was quickly clear that computational cognitive science has rich insight for AI system design to move beyond team formation towards meaningful thought partnership.
so exciting @katenuss! also excited for these students who will get work with an excellent mentor/supervisor with the coolest lab theme ⛄️🥶
I’m recruiting PhD students for my (soon-to-launch) lab at Boston University! If you’re interested in the intersection of computation, learning, & development, please reach out. I’ll be at #Flux2024 and #SNE2024 and am happy to meet up.

[New preprint!] What does it take to build machines that **meet our expectations** and **compliment our limitations**? In this Perspective, we chart out a vision, which engages deeply with computational cognitive science, to design truly human-centric AI “thought partners” 1/

(1/3)I was gutted to learn from the media that after 19 years Im banned from the Nathan's July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest. I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title.

Check out our latest paper on how we process some of the word and event-level content in movies! Glad to see it out - lots of lessons learned with this one. As always, grateful for the support from @Dan_Mirman and @PaulHoffman82
Another monumental piece of work from @MelissaThye's PhD thesis (with @PaulHoffman82 and me): doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-5…. This was a registered report examining semantic and social cognition during naturalistic narrative comprehension (watching a feature-length movie).
