OMG, someone read my review of this painting and pointed out that the lady appears to have 6 toes, I never even noticed! Did... did we just find evidence of the first ai generated art back in 1663 or did the famous artist make a mistake, or is it a joke, or maybe a message?

'Hiking' by James Walker Tucker, 1936 in the Laing, Newcastle. The 1930s was the great era of popular hiking, fitness and fresh air. Railway companies and local authorities published walking guides, and there was a pub, a B&B or a youth hostel in every village to put you up. It has the air of a Ladybird Book illustration!

The porter in my cheap Newcastle hotel talks exactly like the Geordie character in I'm Alan Partridge, he's possibly the nicest bloke I've ever met, but I mostly have absolutely no clue what he's saying 😂.

Guinevere's Dialect. Bigg. As in market. A variety of hardy barley that was grown in the north. 1st recorded 1466. Scandinavian. Compare Old Icelandic bygg. It's still grown on Orkney & is called ....bere.⬇️. That's an OE word and originally meant..🧵

There are a large number of mistaken, often fictional, family histories on the Internet. However I will occasionally post 🔗 to good sites providing sound information for Northumberland and Durham families. One such is devoted to the Whitfield family: whitfield.one-name.net/

Over four years since I first poured myself into the oldest pub debate, and 2+ years after my book came out, the media are finally reporting my findings. Of all the articles produced so far, this is probably now the closest to accurate... theguardian.com/culture/2026…

Someone has written to me suggesting that all early mediaeval and Norman buildings might be Roman. I've just come off a 16 day tour. I'm too tired for this level of conspiracy dross.

It’s always worth having a poke around even the most obscure sources, in this case the previously mentioned Prize Papers In 1734 John Porrett of Stockton, Co. Durham mentioned in his will that one of his young sons was with his uncle Jackson in Porto. Here are their signatures:
