Canadian Prime Minister @MarkJCarney's speech at Davos is quite brilliant. Without vitriol or exaggeration, he outlines the harsh new world that Trump is leading us all toward. Here's the full text; much recommended: globalnews.ca/news/11620877/โฆ

Democracy is a precondition for lasting peace. However, we live in a world where democracy is in retreat, where more and more authoritarian regimes are challenging norms and resorting to violence.
Maria Corina Machado โ awarded the 2025 #NobelPeacePrize โ has spent years working for the freedom of the Venezuelan people. The Venezuelan regimeโs rigid hold on power and its repression of the population are not unique in the world. We see the same trends globally: rule of law abused by those in control, free media silenced, critics imprisoned, and societies pushed towards authoritarian rule and militarisation. In 2024, more elections were held than ever before, but fewer and fewer are free and fair.

Our immune system is an evolutionary masterpiece. Every day it protects us from the thousands of different viruses, bacteria and other microbes that attempt to invade our bodies. Without a functioning immune system, we would not survive.
One of the immune systemโs marvels is its ability to identify pathogens and differentiate them from the bodyโs own cells. The microbes that threaten our health do not wear a uniform โ they all have different appearances. Many have also developed similarities to human cells, as a form of camouflage. So how does the immune system keep track of what to attack and what to protect? Why doesnโt the immune system attack our bodies more frequently?
Researchers long believed they knew the answer to these questions: that immune cells mature through a process called central immune tolerance (see image). However, our immune system turned out to be more complex than they believed. Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.

Winning the @NobelPrize is the honour of a lifetime and the realisation of a lifelong dream - it still hasnโt really sunk in yet.
With AlphaFold2 we cracked the 50-year grand challenge of protein structure prediction: predicting the 3D structure of a protein purely from its amino acid sequence. Proteins are the building blocks of life, and knowing the structure of a protein is crucial for understanding the function it performs.
We then folded all 200 million proteins known to science and made those structures freely available for anyone in the world to use, with the help of our wonderful collaborators at @emblebi. Over 2 million researchers have already used AlphaFold2 and its predictions to advance a huge range of important work - everything from enzyme design, to disease understanding, to drug discovery.
But this is only the beginning. Over the next few years AI will help us make great strides towards developing new and more effective therapies for today's most prevalent diseases, and the fantastic team at @IsomorphicLabs are making rapid progress on this mission. I canโt think of a more important or beneficial use of AI.
Then of course there is advancing AGI itself, the original and enduring goal, and the vision behind the founding of DeepMind nearly 15 years ago. If AI is built safely and responsibly, I believe it will be one of the most transformative and beneficial technologies ever. Iโve always thought of AI as the ultimate tool to help us accelerate scientific discovery.
Congratulations to John Jumper (and David Baker!), the amazing AlphaFold team, and all our incredible colleagues at @GoogleDeepMind and @Google that supported and encouraged us along the way - this award is for all of us! Itโs been such an honour and privilege to work with all of you to advance the frontiers of AI and science, and there is so much more to come!
