My latest piece in @truthout explaining how the fascist RSS managed to secure a spot on one of the world's most coveted stages for its supreme leader, Mohan Bhagwat.
About 5,000 people attended an NYC rally led by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, spotlighting the U.S. reach of the Hindu nationalist group. The event drew protests and criticism over the RSS’s record on minority rights. buff.ly/5j6nBYV

A former full-time RSS pracharak has written to Amit Shah and Priyank Kharge demanding that the RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal be declared terrorist organisations. Yashwant Sahdev Shinde served the Sangh for 25 years. He says he quit after being asked to join a bomb-preparation and training team. In 2022 he filed a sworn affidavit in the Nanded CBI court detailing alleged bomb-making camps in 2003 under VHP leader Milind Parande, weapons training linked to Indresh Kumar, and a coordinated plan of blasts meant to polarise and help the BJP electorally. He has now gone further. He wants Mohan Bhagwat, Indresh Kumar and Parande investigated and arrested for their alleged roles in the string of 2000s blasts that were repeatedly blamed on “fringe elements” or Muslims. The same organisations that lecture the nation on nationalism and patriotism face a demand for ban from one of their own long-time workers. The same ecosystem that weaponises every allegation against opponents has no answer when the allegation comes from inside. Courts closed many of those cases. Acquittals followed. The questions Shinde raises did not disappear with the verdicts. When an insider who spent decades in the organisation calls it what he does, the burden of explanation shifts. Silence is no longer an option. A lot is here to conclude from. It’s now or never. #RSS #BanRSS #BJP

This new film by @FriedrichPieter exposes how former DNI @TulsiGabbard's career was bankrolled by US leaders of the RSS, a Hindu-nationalist paramilitary outfit. External handlers scripted her moves for years, yet the Senate ignored every red flag during her confirmation.

This is still one of my favorite papers, since it takes a stand against the intellectual shortcuts that have become so popular lately. It has been far too easy for people on both the left and the right to claim that capitalism is over and that we have somehow slipped back into++

I hope you'll join us for this panel on the Global Turn to the Right, sponsored by the Global Critical Studies & Praxis forum. I'll be presenting findings from my latest ethnographic fieldwork on why caste-oppressed people back the Hindu supremacist movement in India.

This panel was originally scheduled to take place in-person at ASA 2026. Sadly, we had to shift it to a virtual format after ASA leadership decided to stand with génocidaires over its own membership. #boycottasa @Soc4Pal

Sociologists stand in solidarity for a democratic ASA and a free Palestine. Sign the boycott pledge, and look out for alternative sessions & organizing events outside of ASA for folks who will be in the NYC area. #BoycotttASA

Much of public debate about Mamdani centers on whether he has shifted to the center, given too many concessions, played nice with Trump and right-wing Democrats, etc. But this piece nails it. The real test is whether his administration is bolstering or hampering mass organization. (Even policy success and long-term effects of policy depend on that.) And in that regard, the evidence is mixed. @its_mccarthy, however, is less interested in passing judgment and more in encouraging people to keep organizing. hammerandhope.org/article/tr… We should indeed care less about whether a leader is PC enough or not, and focus our attention on whether people are learning to fight collectively for their future.

#RSS | When faced with political exposure on caste, communal violence or minority rights, the RSS has often used the method—outreach while leaving hierarchies intact—to deflect any criticism of its exclusionary politics. It has spawned several organisations targeting particular communities, giving them benign names to paper over their dark foundations. In December 2002, barely nine months after the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat, where Narendra Modi was the chief minister at the time, it launched the Muslim Rashtriya Manch. More recently, the US arm of the Sangh created the Ambedkar–Phule Network of American Dalits and Bahujans, with the very clear aim of opposing legislation to prevent caste discrimination in California, invoking Ambedkar’s name to fight the very cause he gave his life to. Dhirendra K Jha reports how the Dalit Panthers forced the RSS into changing its language on caste: caravanmagazine.in/history/h…

There you have it. Anthropic's CEO said it: The murder of more than 100 schoolgirls in Minab targeted by Anthropic's CLAUDE "is a use case that doesn't even violate our red lines." Time to rise up against these technofeudal war criminals.
CEO of Anthropic Dario Amodei awkwardly smiles through his answer to a question about why Claude AI directly contributed to the US Military bombing of the elementary school in Minab.

At least 15 cases of sexual assaults, including rape. Shot with rubber bullets at close range. Tens of people’s bones broken. While the world’s eye is trained on the suffering of our participants, we cannot emphasize enough that this is a mere glimpse of the brutality israel imposes daily on Palestinian hostages. Don’t let up. Statements of condemnation are not enough. This moment must be seized by people worldwide to apply the necessary pressure to end this colonial violence. Pressure officials. Escalate boycott and divestment tactics. Organize direct action. “Please, if this can be a lightning rod moment, let it be that … join us wherever you are and rise up so that we can end this occupation, end this colonialism, end this violence.” Free Palestine NOW.

"They don’t want trans people to live and stand, trans people living dignified lives. Obviously, you know, one or two or three people they select, and they are providing this scheme, that scheme. That’s it. Beyond that, they don’t allow trans people to raise their voice, raise their rights-based demands. That is why these people are not ready to provide reservation rights for trans people." Aranya, an assistant editor at The Caravan, spoke to Grace Banu, founder and director of Trans Rights Now Collective, about the demand for horizontal reservations and about key issues facing the transgender community in the country.
