📉 Sumter’s crime rates are headed in the right direction! Crime in the City of Sumter dropped 31% in 2025, and the latest available 2026 data shows reported offenses are down another 17% over the past 12 months! We’ve also helped reduce the backlog of violent criminal cases in Sumter by 67%, strengthen our laws, and provide law enforcement with the resources they need. I’m grateful for Sheriff Anthony Dennis, Chief Deputy Hampton Gardner, Chief Russell Roark, and all our officers who work every day to keep Sumter families safe. There’s more work to do, but when Team Sumter works together, we get it done! #CrimeNews #sumtersc #PublicSafety #lawenforcement #murrellsmith
📉 Crime stats in South Carolina are moving in the right direction. The latest FBI data show violent crime in South Carolina fell 10.5%, with murders, robberies, aggravated assaults, and property crime all declining. That progress does not happen overnight. It comes from years of backing the men and women in law enforcement, giving prosecutors stronger tools, investing in prevention, and holding dangerous offenders accountable. In recent years, we have strengthened South Carolina’s laws against deadly fentanyl with a new fentanyl-induced homicide law carrying up to 30 years in prison. In 2023, I lead and passed legislation to crack down on repeat violent offenders who commit new crimes while already out on bond, strengthening penalties and allowing previous bonds to be revoked in serious cases. We have also stepped up the fight against organized criminal networks by strengthening penalties and giving law enforcement more tools to target trafficking operations and repeat offenders. Recent enforcement efforts have already resulted in dozens of indictments and the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and illegal firearms. Here at home, we have invested in the people and resources keeping Sumter safe, including $400,000 to strengthen the Sumter Police Department’s training facility and a new $9.1 million behavioral health emergency unit at Prisma Health Tuomey so people in crisis can get appropriate care right here in our community. There is still work to do. I’ll keep working with our local law enforcement officers, first responders, and community partners to continue the fight against crime. 📚 More great news for South Carolina schools! The 2026 South Carolina School Report Cards were released today, and the results show even more progress in our classrooms! 📈 320 schools earned an Excellent rating, up from 270 last year! 🎓 87.5% of students are graduating on time, the highest rate in a decade! ⭐ More than half of our schools earned a Good or Excellent rating, another record high! We're seeing encouraging progress right here at home in Sumter, too. It's exciting to see the hard work happening in our local classrooms as we continue building more opportunities for our students. We've worked hard to make education a priority in the State House, and it's great to see that commitment producing results. I want to thank our teachers, students, parents, and school leaders for everything they do to make this progress possible. We've come a long way, and we're not slowing down! Let's keep getting it done for our kids! 🔎 Explore the report cards: screportcards.ed.sc.gov/ #SumterSC #TeamSumter #Education #GetsItDone

🍎 Good news for our Sumter teachers! Teachers in Sumter County are now eligible for a new student loan forgiveness program aimed at helping educators keep more of their hard-earned money and stay in the classroom. We included $10 million in this year’s state budget to make this program possible, along with an opportunity for eligible teachers to refinance student loans at a 2% interest rate. 💸 Our teachers do important work every day for Sumter’s kids, and I’m proud we were able to make this investment in the people who invest so much in the next generation. 👀 If you’re a teacher in Sumter, take a look and see if you qualify: scstudentloan.org/refinancin… #sumterschooldistrict #teachers #sumtersc #loanforgiveness #murrellsmith

Congratulations @AGAlanWilson on a strong debate tonight! It was great to hear his focus on putting kids and families first, working together, and finding innovative ways to solve the challenges facing our state. As Alan said, we’ve already made progress on several issues that matter to people back home. We passed the SCDOT Modernization Act to find better ways to build roads and reduce congestion. We fought for the Fentanyl-Induced Homicide Act to hold drug dealers accountable. And we passed Bond Reform to give our courts stronger tools to keep dangerous repeat offenders off our streets. But we’re not done yet. Alan and I have worked together on public safety issues, and I appreciate his commitment to building on that progress and working with the General Assembly to keep getting things done for South Carolina.

🏠 Here in Sumter, many of our neighbors are feeling the pressure of higher everyday costs, especially those living on fixed incomes. With about 1 in 5 Sumter County residents age 65 or older, that matters for a lot of families in our community. That’s why I worked this year to help provide more property-tax relief for qualifying homeowners. We increased the Homestead Exemption from $50,000 to $75,000, shielding an additional $25,000 of a qualifying home’s value from property taxes. As the cost of groceries, bills and other everyday necessities continues to put pressure on household budgets, this relief can help ease some of that burden. And I’ll keep working to lower costs, support our neighbors, and get it done for Sumter. #SumterSC #GetsItDone #MurrellSmith #Affordability

Last week, I had the honor of joining military leaders from across South Carolina for the Governor’s Commanders Briefing. Proud of the important role our military community plays in our state and grateful for all those who serve.
Honored to join @henrymcmaster, Secretary McCaffrey, and our military commanders and leaders for yesterday’s Governor’s Commanders Briefing. South Carolina is proud to be home to eight major military installations and a tremendous military community. Our military presence is not only critical to our national defense, but an important part of the fabric of our state and a tremendous economic asset. The General Assembly will continue standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our military leaders and working to ensure South Carolina remains a state where military families are welcomed, installations have the infrastructure they need, and our communities are strong partners in the missions you carry out. Thank you to all who serve our state and nation!

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting the National Speakers Conference in Greenville and welcoming legislative leaders from across the country to South Carolina. 🇺🇸 It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and talk about the work happening in our states. The conference provides an open forum where political parties and ideologies are set aside, and we work together for the betterment of the people we represent. And it is always good to find a little bit of Sumter wherever you go! ❤️ I was proud to have Gloria Logan-Farmer with the Voices of Deliverance representing our community. If you have never experienced their joyous music, I highly encourage you to take the opportunity when you can! 🎶 Finally, I enjoyed passing the gavel to the next Chairman of the National Speakers Conference, my friend, Illinois Speaker Chris Welch. It was a great week showcasing South Carolina and our hospitality. I was especially proud to see Sumter represented so well in such a special setting. 🌴 #SouthCarolina #SumterSC #NationalSpeakersConference

25 years ago, our nation was forever changed. Today, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives taken on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, service members, and ordinary Americans who answered unimaginable tragedy with extraordinary courage. We also remember what followed, a country united by a shared love of America and a determination to stand together. May we never forget those we lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the strength and unity Americans showed in the days that followed. God bless their families, our first responders and service members, and the United States of America. 🇺🇸 #NeverForget #September11

👀 You may see this video popping up starting today, so I wanted to share it here first! It’s an honor to represent this district and work alongside Team Sumter to keep moving our community forward. Together, we’ve helped create 1,600 new industrial jobs, brought $1.4 billion in investment to Sumter’s economy, and secured $403 million for roads and bridges. That’s real progress, and there’s more work to do! I’m ready to keep showing up, keep listening, and keep getting it done for Sumter. 54 days to go. 🇺🇸 #MurrellSmith #GetsItDone #SumterSC
