人事部に呼び出され、こう告げられた。
「あなたは職務を放棄した疑いで調査されています」
思わず笑いそうになった。
私の休暇は、何週間も前に正式に承認されていた。
出発前、上司もこう言っていた。
「ゆっくり楽しんできて。仕事のメールは見なくていいから」
だから私は通知を切って、旅行に出かけた。
ところが、私が休んでいる間に、上司は重要なプロジェクトの締め切りを勝手に早めた。
もちろん、私には何の連絡もなかった。
そして出勤した初日、上司は私を人事部に告発した。
「どうして締め切りを守らなかったんだ？」
私が「休暇中でした」と答えると、上司は平然と言った。
「メールくらい確認するべきだったな」
私は彼を見つめた。
「出発前に、メールは見なくていいと言いましたよね？」
その瞬間、人事担当者の手が止まった。
そして上司に、たった一つの質問をした。
「この休暇を承認したのは、あなたですか？」
上司はすぐに答えなかった。
ここから、話は思わぬ方向へ進んだ。
