Silk relies heavily on web APIs, like Scroll snap and WAAPI. While building it, I also took care to anticipate new ones, like the Scroll-driven animations API. For each feature, I reviewed and experimented with the existing APIs to see how well they fit. I also had a look at upcoming ones, and sometimes took part in the conversation to try and improve them before they shipped—like I just did with the interactivity CSS property. Every time, I tried several solutions, sometimes deciding to go with web APIs, sometimes holding off because I realised they were not yet ready, like . I considered performance, accessibility and flexibility to arrive at a solution that enabled the use cases I wanted Silk to cover. Silk isn’t just about appearance—it's unstyled by default. Its design is the result a lot of thoughtful work and experience with the web, aiming to be flexible, robust, and long-lasting. As new web APIs become viable, Silk will continue to evolve to make the most of them.

🎉The @CMAgovUK appears to formally agree to phase-out third-party cookies from Chrome web browsers (seen as 'reasonable'). On Apple's iOS/iPhone/iPads. Great day for competition and privacy! assets.publishing.service.go…

In military terms the EU Commission's launch of five DMA breach investigations (shortly after the DMA became enforceable) would be described as a "shock-and-awe strategy.* But some of the issues are small, such as the iOS browser choice screen. Maybe they'll get to bigger stuff.

Apple has caved yet again in the EU, this time for direct download. Browsers need both be allowed to offer direct download and control the update mechanism without scare screens. Another DMA win! 9to5mac.com/2024/03/12/iphon…

A quick summary of glaring problems we've found so far: 1) Apple has introduced an anticompetitive new 27% tax on web purchases. Apple has never done this before, and it kills price competition. Developers can't offer digital items more cheaply on the web after paying a third-party payment processor 3-6% and paying this new 27% Apple Tax. 2) Apple dictates all aspects of these links and doesn't allow them in the app's ordinary payment flow. Rather, links must be separated out into a different section of the app, away from places where users actually buy stuff. 3) Apple requires developers to open a generic web browser session, forcing the user to log in to the developer's web site again, to make a purchase. And because of #2, users will have to search all over again for the digital item they wanted to buy. 4) Apple will front-run competing payment processors with their own "scare screen" to disadvantage them. Epic will contest Apple's bad-faith compliance plan in District Court.

UK browser investigation to restart Jan 24 after Apple failed to appeal to the supreme court! Perhaps Apple realised that the negative news generated by a supreme court case would harm their brand and further thrust their anti-competitive behaviour into the global spotlight.

Apple is attempting to escape the obligations of the Digital Markets Act for iPad. In our submission to the EU we outline why that would be a terrible outcome for both consumers and the Web. It is critical that the Web be allowed to compete fairly and equally on every device.

In a massive blow to competition Apple has managed to shut the CMA's investigation into mobile browsers on a legal technicality. One of the key remedies proposed was forcing Apple to allow rival browsers makers to port their real browsers to iOS. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
