TWO YEARS AGO TODAY, in a small, private ceremony, The Virginia Flaggers raised and dedicated a 20’ x 30’ Confederate Battle Flag on a 80’ pole, on private land adjacent to Hwy 58 in Danville, Virginia. The Virginia Flaggers Danville Hwy 58 Col Powhatan Bolling Whittle Roadside Memorial Battle Flag was dedicated to the Glory of God, in memory of all Confederate soldiers, and in special honor of Col. Powhatan Bolling Whittle. The youngest of 15 children, Powhatan Bolling Whittle was the son of Fortescue Whittle, an Irish immigrant, and his wife Mary Ann Davis, a descendant of Pocahontas, and therefore he was the 7X great grandson of Chief Powhatan. A lawyer and graduate of the University of Virginia, Whittle was an imposing man, standing six and a half feet tall. Whittle was 31 years old when the War Between the States began. He volunteered and was commissioned Lt. Colonel of the 38th Virginia Infantry, known as “The Pittsylvania Regiment.” His size and his courage made him a conspicuous target. Slightly more than a month after being shot in the right leg at the Battle of Williamsburg, Colonel Whittle was back, leading his regiment in the failed attacks on Malvern Hill. With the regiment pinned down at the base of the hill, the Federals began concentrating their fire on the color bearers. Each time one would fall someone else would pick up the colors, only to be shot down in turn. Seeing yet another color bearer fall, Colonel Whittle himself took up the flag and soon suffered a wound that required the amputation of his left arm. Colonel Whittle recovered from the wound and while he could have honorably retired from front-line duty, instead he returned to lead the regiment in Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, where he was shot through both his remaining arm and his left leg. Remarkably, he again survived, but his last wounds were so severe that he spent the remainder of the war as a military judge and quartermaster. After the war Colonel Whittle practiced law in Macon, Georgia, eventually becoming a judge and a state legislator. Powhatan Whittle died on February 21, 1905 at age 75 and was buried in his family’s cemetery in Mecklenburg County. This is the 17th Roadside Memorial Battle Flag raised in Danville, Virginia since City Council voted to remove one tiny 3x5 First National from the Confederate Memorial on the grounds of the Last Confederate Capitol, and the 36th Roadside Memorial Flag raised by The Virginia Flaggers in the Commonwealth since 2013. And the French authorities still refuse to say that any of this has anything to do with immigration. Fools.
*🇫🇷 WATCH: France’s Riots — Paul Amar Says Jewish-Owned Shops Were Targeted in Marseille* French journalist Paul Amar, discussing the October 17 unrest in France, says Jewish-owned businesses were singled out on a street in Marseille: “They came prepared. They had the addresses of town halls. They had addresses of Jewish shop owners. In a street in Marseille, all businesses owned by Jews were set on fire. Businesses run by Muslims weren’t.”

“We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideas of Christianity, in fact our movement is Christian.” — Adolf Hitler, speech in Passau, October 27, 1928. “We demand freedom of religion for all within our nation-state so long as they do not endanger its existence nor the objective moral senses of the Germanic race. The party, as such, advocates from the standpoint of Positive Christianity without binding itself confessionally to any particular denomination. It combats the Jewish-materialistic spirit within and around us, and is convinced that the lasting recovery of our nation can only succeed from within this framework: Common utility precedes individual utility.” — Point 24 of the NSDAP 25-Point Program, February 24, 1920. “And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator. In standing guard against the Jew I am defending the handiwork of the Lord.”) — Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, Volume 1, Chapter 2 (1925).

The problem with Bertrand's explanation is rooted in his equation of the current riots with past riots, centuries ago, by French people, using the quantitative and context-less arguments of Peter Turchin about the recurrence of past demographic Malthusian cycles, "overproduced elites," and "immiseration." He invokes Les Misérables and French street riots during Napoleonic times without any awareness of the intrusive racial diversity imposed from above by current elites, and without any sense that those riots were class-based, without a racial component, and without the incredible animosity of nonwhites for native French. Under that homogeneous French reality, one can interpret the violence of past riots as claims about the distribution of resources by a culturally common people, other than class divisions. But under the current reality it makes no sense to ignore the divisions of immigrant multiculturalism. This is palpable in the way student protests over school conditions automatically incorporate racially aware actors targeting France's symbols and historic buildings. Turchin's theory of elite overproduction describes a "surplus of credentialed youth"; it does not describe why the surplus is disproportionately drawn from African and Muslim populations. This is a population with very different norms, systematically in conflict with the historic nation of France. In the past, the older industrial order, without immigrants, interpreted unrest as a wage negotiation inside a relatively homogeneous working class. The present post-Fordist order has dismantled that class through the importation of lower-skill (and higher-fertility) populations whose integration is measured only by economic participation, rather than by integration into France’s norms and traditions. Bertrand, as a typical liberal, reduces French identity to a civic identity that anyone in the world can, in principle, acquire and become just as French as someone with a long ancestry in France. He refuses to recognize countless studies showing that blacks and Muslims have their own ingroup racial interests and behavioral inclinations that are actually inconsistent with the individualism that is imposed upon native French. It is absurd to talk in generic terms about "immiseration" or "elite overproduction" in a France that has been flooded with millions of foreign immigrants and in which the majority of rioters are nonwhite or whites who hate France. While I don't deny that cycle theories can describe the debt, the poverty rate, and the like, they cannot describe why these particular riots have the racial characteristics they do, and why they entail discussions about immigration, integration, whether France has a culture that should not be Africanized and Islamized, whether Africans have a lower average IQ, whether they are disproportionately involved in sexual assaults and countless other crimes, and whether they even care to learn a curriculum that is rooted in France's heritage and requires high skills in a high-tech society.
Pretty funny to see everyone blame this (rightly condemned, to be clear) on whatever their political bogeyman is: I've just seen people say that this is because of, take your pick, "communism," "Islamism," "third worldism," "Russia," and "China". As if France needed any outside help to riot... Maybe some people need to brush up on our history, or read Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables"... This isn't to romanticize the rioters in the least. A reminder that in Les Misérables there's the figure of Thénardier, a horrendous scoundrel who exploits the chaos around him, robbing corpses and fleecing anyone he can. Every chaotic moment in French history has its share of Thénardiers, and this one is no exception. It's just too easy, and actually useful to those in power, to blame this on outside forces. At the end of the day, this anger was made in France, is happening in France, and can only be solved in France. And, as painful as it is to hear, if one studies history, this is pretty much exactly what's expected at the stage France is at. People have studied this. Whether you take Ray Dalio’s six-stage cycle theory, Peter Turchin’s "elite overproduction" thesis or the Chinese dynastic cycle framework, they all come to the same conclusion: when debt piles up, public services crumble and those in power become incapable, the streets eventually explode. In fact it's almost eerie how France ticks almost every box of most cycle theories: - Fiscal distress (debt is 119% of GDP and we now pay more to borrow than Italy or Greece), - Crumbling public services: a reminder that these protests (now turning into riots) started with high school students protesting over the state of education - Political paralysis and a legitimacy crisis (Macron has an insane 82% disapproval rate, he's definitely lost the Mandate of Heaven...) - Popular immiseration with a record poverty rate at 15.4% and a median wage at only €2,190 net per month for a full-time private sector employee (you can't even afford to rent a decent flat in any major French city with this) "Third worldism" or "Islamism" isn't the cause of any of this: French governments didn't borrow like there's no tomorrow (the last balanced budget dates back to 1974!) because the "Muslim Brotherhood" told them to, and it wasn’t Putin or Xi who left French classrooms without teachers... Sadly the reactions - scapegoating - are ALSO typical of this stage of the cycle: Dalio lists among the classic markers of Stage 5 the emergence of "scapegoat classes who are commonly believed to be the source of the problems" (linkedin.com/pulse/delving-s…), alongside a "loss of truth in the public domain," with people more interested in hunting for culprits than looking for solutions. So what is the solution? Well, the way the Chinese dealt with it was basically a reset - regime-changing themselves with a new dynasty claiming the Mandate of Heaven, usually after decades of rebellion and war. Not exactly a hopeful prospect... There is also the exception where a dynasty managed what the Chinese call a 中兴 (zhōngxīng, "restoration"): profound reform from within before the whole house came down. It succeeded a few times (e.g. the Tongzhi restoration during the Qing dynasty) but usually could only buy a few more decades, rarely more. In 1945, the writer Huang Yanpei famously asked Mao how to break free of the cycle (cn.vlex.com/vid/constitution…), framing it in those terms: "People are careful and hard-working at first, for bold measures are the only possible ways to break through difficult conditions. But when things gradually get better, people begin slacking off: laziness may spread through a long history and is impossible to be corrected when it becomes a common practice. Gradually expanded territory requires corresponding increases in talent, but when the latter is insufficient, the central control will become weak. In a word, no one can escape the 'vicious cycle' of dynastic rise and collapse." Mao replied that democracy was the answer, because "as long as the people can supervise the government, the government dare not slacken." And Xi later added a "second answer" (chinadailyhk.com/hk/article/…): a system capable of "resolute self-reform". The jury is still out on whether China has broken the cycle, but if France has any hope of escaping it, it will need both answers at once: a government that truly answers to its people, and very resolute self-reform. One thing the answer definitely isn’t: turning on each other. In all these cycle theories, division and scapegoating appear on the way down, never on the way back up.

Everyone should read The Lessons of History by Will and Ariel Durant at least once. The Durants spent about four decades writing an 11-volume history of civilization, around 10,000 pages in total. Then they wrote this book, about 100 pages long, with everything they had learned. Each chapter takes one big idea: biology, race, war, religion, economics, government. The first lesson is blunt: “life is competition.” You can read it in an afternoon. It’s the best 100 pages of history you will ever read.
