Remember -- there are still some runoffs elections in Mississippi, and they're happening next week.
The Marshall Project's Jackson team was excited to partner with @boltsmag to examine the stakes. @Taniel highlights those stakes even more succinctly below.
NEW: It's not over: there's a runoff for Mississippi's supreme court is *Tuesday*.
A very conservative justice lost in an upset on Nov. 5.
But now the GOP hopes to cancel out that loss: A moderate justice faces runoff against a GOP lawmaker.

Mississippi voters have dealt defeat to one conservative state Supreme Court justice and forced a moderate justice into a Nov. 26 runoff, with the final outcome possibly making the court more open to considering the rights of criminal defendants.

Yesterday, I helped lead a joint hearing of the Senate and House Democratic Caucuses on how MS can fix our broken welfare system. Everyone knows about the scandal involving the Dept of Human Services and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Some thoughts:

Reminder: At least $77 million in federal dollars intended to help Mississippi's poorest residents was misspent, and Mississippi lawmakers have not held one single hearing about TANF reform, protecting taxpayer dollars, adding guardrails for block grant spending.
Nothing.

Denying the right to vote to an entire group of citizens is undemocratic and delays racial equity.

BREAKING: The full Fifth Circuit, on a 13-6 vote, upholds Mississippi’s lifetime ban on voting by those convicted of any of a number of felonies. A prior three-judge panel had held that the ban violates the 8th Amendment. The full court rejected that. storage.courtlistener.com/re…

ALT IV. Holding Art. XII, Section 241 of the Mississippi Constitution categorically unconstitutional, even as to a limited set of offenders, is at odds with the Supreme Court's and other courts' decisions, would thwart the ability of the State's legislature and citizens to determine their voting qualifications, and would require federal courts overtly to make legislative choices that, in our federal system, belong at the State level. The district court's judgment denying relief to the Plaintiffs is AFFIRMED.
