2 ‘accept me as I am’ version w/ ADHD couples that don’t work for me: 1) ADHD partner- ‘love me unconditionally & accept me as I am’ while taking little or no control of symptoms 2) Non-ADHD partner- feels controlling behaviors are justified due to chaos, trampling others

Time is our most precious commodity. You DO have a choice to not give it to others. Use your phone less often… How about an automated text response such as “I will not be answering texts today but will respond to you Sunday evening after 7pm.”

Having ADHD does not automatically make someone an unsuitable partner. At the same time, deliberately hiding it may create consequences. What do you think?

ADHD & ‘hyperfocus courtship’ - it is dopamine change, not that they don't love you. How to deal: - Name it - low dopamine levels - Internalize that it's not personal - Get ADHD treatment - Schedule romantic time Are you struggling with ‘hyperfocus courtship?’ #neurodivergent

Non-ADHD partner: “You’re always so negative about me!” What went thru partner's head? “That’s because you don’t do what you say you're going to do!”  A much better response: “Gee, I wonder why he or she is saying that now?” #Listen #communicate #ADHD

“My friends say I have an intimacy problem but they don’t really know me.” - Garry Shandling - As quoted by David Brooks If you are feeling disconnected, you are both struggling, & I get that.  But you can’t be more intimate if you don’t at least try to connect. #ADHD

The nature of ADHD – chronic distraction; difficulty engaging reliably; trouble following through; memory issues; emotional lability – all hit at the heart of what relationships are all about. Yet adults w/ ADHD are also compassionate; warm; joyfully in the moment...

I was asked why the commonly-used expression ‘reward-focused’ brain doesn't accurately describe the ADHD experience. For those trying to understand what those w/ ADHD go through & the unconscious implications of language, this is a worthwhile read. adhdmarriage.com/blog/reward…

Sometimes real love dies even when both partners are trying really hard. Maybe no one screwed up. I’ve seen couples: grow apart; unable to manage stresses of being parents; crippled by financial stress; give in to family of origin pressure; succumb to ADHD symptoms & responses.

That someone is ‘perfect’ just by being themselves is a myth. It assumes a ‘happily ever after’ just by being together. That’s just not how healthy, joyous relationships work.

As I see it, when you are wronged you have a choice to make – to experience your pain and decide what to do with it in a good way, or to hold the pain dear and turn it into a grudge. adhdmarriage.com/newsletter/… #FridayFocus
