Of 4 collaboration strategies to deploy #AI for the diagnosis of ARDS from chest XR, the most accurate is to allow AI review the XR first & defer to the physician if uncertain. 79% of cases were decided by AI - significantly reducing physician workload.

I've been accused of "relentlessly" covering the pulse oximeter issue. Guilty as charged. I find this issue critical. It's a microcosm of the painful, historical, scientific & nuanced ways race interests with medicine. Here's a🧵of our coverage. statnews.com/2022/11/01/puls…

1/ Excited to announce our new work at @MLHC2022! Many patient risk-stratification ML models are trained using lab test results as labels. But testing disparities are known to exist across patient groups. (w/ @msjoding, Jenna Wiens) @MichiganAI (arxiv.org/abs/2208.01127)

There are much harder crosses to bear in life, but @A2schools abject failure to make evidence-based decisions or prioritize our kids’ education is deplorable. Where do they think kids go when they are not in school?!? In to negative pressure rooms?!?. No excuses and no words.

Highest child vaccination rate in the state and @A2SchoolsSuper still closing schools against @SecCardona and @GovWhitmer’s advice. An embarrassment.

AACN reached out to the American Heart Association (AHA) about their 2021 interim CPR guidance in patients with known or suspected COVID-19. We offered feedback on aspects of the guidelines we found unclear or potentially unsafe.

These AHA guidelines, if followed, would get healthcare workers killed.
That is not an exaggeration.
Some of us have chronic illnesses, high-risk conditions, compromised immune systems.
It's wrong to disregard HCWs lives like this. Retract this immediately @American_Heart.

Are there clinical subphenotypes of COVID19?
🤔
We tried to answer this question with @msjoding @progdoctalk @bhavani_md @_plyons @a_serpaneto @robertpdickson using data from 3 cohorts in 🇳🇱 and 🇺🇸
NEW—At baseline, #COVID19-related #ARDS has no consistent resp subphenotype. Pts diverged from fairly homogenous to a more heterogeneous popn, w/ trajectories of ventilatory ratio and mechanical power being the most discriminatory.

Thank you for folks who have shared or commented on our paper. I know the paper is being used by some to dunk on Epic. Rather than piling on, I want to provide a clear-eyed view of what we found, what it means, and what I would suggest to Epic (& other model devs) going forward.
Study suggests that the Epic Sepsis Model poorly predicts #sepsis; its widespread adoption despite poor performance raises fundamental concerns about sepsis management on a national level ja.ma/3xymYCo
