This is pristine land. This is God’s country. And what’s happening at Big Bend is devastating. Once this landscape is destroyed, we can’t simply get it back. Big Bend is part of our natural heritage, and we have a responsibility to protect it for the people who call this region home and for generations to come.

Bulldozers are already moving in Big Bend, where a massive federal border project could reshape one of Texas’ most treasured landscapes. The Statesman Editorial Board argues Texas leaders should do more than voice concern — they should use their power to demand answers and protect what’s at stake. statesman.com/opinion/editor…

Our recent update on the Big Bend situation: texasobserver.org/state-of-p…
More destruction today in Big Bend. Bulldozers and excavators are being trucked into the wildest corner of Texas, preparing to inflict an irreversible scar on the national park. This absurd project is despised by everyone in West Texas. When will Texas leadership step in?

People struggle to understand the remote nature of Big Bend. In 2015 I flew a plane around the entire border of Texas and photographed it from the air. It took 6 days to complete the trip. Big Bend alone was one full day of flying and photographing. Both sides of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo, are hundreds of miles of the most inhospitable, yet beautiful desert landscape. The Chihuahuan Desert is unforgiving country. A place with massive rock cliffs and very little terrain you can traverse by foot safely. The visitor rate in the park is on the lower end compared to more accessible parks like Yosemite and The Great Smoky Mountains, but its popularity among those who have actually visited is astounding. In fact, this summer I was camped in the Smoky Mountains next to an older couple who travels the country in their RV. Being from North Carolina they had spent a lot of time there as well as many of the parks in the West. They saw my ¡Viva Terlingua! sticker and asked if I’d been. I told them that I’d spent about a week in Big Bend for the last 19 years and got out there any time I could. They said they took the desolate drive along State Highway 90 through Sanderson on their way out. It was on the husband’s bucket list to visit and it was by far his favorite park now that he had. The untouched, rugged, austere nature of that area is the feature that draws people in and leaves a lasting impression. If you’re at a loss to understand why there’s such an uproar over construction of a road barrier through Big Bend Ranch State Park and BBNP, then it’s my belief that you’ve likely never been. Because if you had, you’d understand.

Yordan Alvarez has 479 PA this season, the exact number Jeff Bagwell had at the time his epic 1994 campaign was interrupted. Alvarez may end up winning the AL Triple Crown this season, but dear god Bagwell was mashing.

I know Texas banned speed cameras but what about cameras to automatically ticket people who park at the pump at Buc-ee’s?

So long, America🫡🇺🇸 49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA. Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited. So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome! I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly: “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.” Thank you, America ❤️🇺🇸

A tragic day in Portuguese football as Boavista are forced to shut down and cease all operations. The end of a historic 123-year old institution. One of just 5 teams to have ever won the Portuguese top flight, this marks the painful demise of one of Portugal's biggest clubs.
