I have a play reading on 15 October, and, as is the way of all playwrights, I must devote my social media accounts to ruthless self-promotion.
Please come and hear my first science-fiction play, and then tell me what you think (nicely).

Thinking about Patrick Stewart and Picard and why the character was so special to millions.
Because he defies the quote below. Picard was rigid, stuffy, to his bones good man, and effortlessly the most compelling character whenever he’s on screen. A rare gift.

When people talk about that "old-school theatre" acting vibe, what they really mean is that these performers learned their trade the hard way, treading the boards night after night in repertory companies.
Actors such as Patrick Stewart and Brian Blessed both came out of working-class Yorkshire families - Stewart the son of a textile worker, Blessed of a coal miner - while others like Anthony Hopkins, from a baker's household in industrial Port Talbot, Albert Finney from a northern working-class background, and Ian McKellen - despite going to Cambridge - from the mill towns of Lancashire, spent years in regional rep theatres taking on every kind of role and refining their craft under real pressure before anything like fame arrived.
For many of them the Royal Shakespeare Company then offered a further proving ground, giving them major classical stages on which to display the authority and technical command they had already built up over years of weekly rep. That long, grounded apprenticeship is what produced the presence that later carried so well into both London West End theatre, television, and film.
It stands in sharp contrast to so many of today's instant stars, who tend to come from more comfortable middle-class backgrounds, leave drama school, and move almost straight into television or film stardom without that same prolonged period of learning by doing on the boards.
I want this dress (with cape) and an occasion to wear it to, please.
It could be a sci fi movie costume but it is in fact a late #1930s evening ensemble by Ukrainian born designer Valentina. Made from wood ale grey silk chiffon, the fine pleats are caught together by a broad silver leather belt @ChicagoMuseum #FashionHistory

in 1817, awaiting the arrival of a massive statue of Ramesses II (known in greek as Ozymandias) at British shores, Percy Shelley and Horace Smith proposed a duel, to see who could write a better sonnet inspired by the statue and an inscription. A generational mogging ensued.

there is something genuinely sad about modern gothic lit adaptations making the women simply love interests to who is originally their abusers or murderers, the same happened in frankenstein (2026) as well, it is not the progressive writing people think it is
Usually when I’m stressed, I resort to watching my comfort episodes of the West Wing.
The last month or so, only Star Trek will do. I feel like that’s not a good sign.
Years ago, I had a conversation with a friend about how DIY dentistry is an absolute dealbreaker in a potential boyfriend.
Tonight’s play proved me right - DIY dentists are psychopaths.
(I gave the actors a real panto reaction when I realised just what *kind* of psychopath).
There are vineyards in north county Dublin. From which wine is produced. For €60 a bottle.
I don’t know which of those facts is most astonishing.
(I think label must say “for those who live dangerously” or something - they have to know, right?)
“We [the Irish] don’t do suave as a personality trait. Pierce Brosnan was a one-off, and no one really knows how it happened. And it seems to have come at the cost of his ability to sing.”
Look, I said a mildly witty thing at dinner yesterday, and I want to extend its half-life.
Serious theatre festival sends email about this year is all about mothers and matriarchy and female experiences.
50% of the shows the festival has programmed on this theme were written by me

When anyone mentions Marilyn Monroe’s pill addiction I am honour bound to bring up her severe incredibly painful endometriosis that she had surgery on BACK THEN because it was so bad. She was considered unreliable by men when she was mostly in debilitating pain
