- Ted Chiang, "Exhalation"
Week 3, Time

All levels and all genres welcome! While we'll do some in-class exercises, this is a craft seminar, not a workshop. DM me for any questions, and here's that link!

Hey everyone, in two weeks I'll be teaching an online seminar though @lighthousewrite, on realist fiction with unreality at its center. Details below and at the sign-up link below. Anyone can register. I cannot wait to dive into these stories together!
ALT Come write with me! "The Grit & the Pearl: Realist Stories with Unreal Centers," Sunday December 8 on Zoom, 10AM to 12PM Mountain time
It's impossible to narrow this topic to a handful of stories, but I want us to look at Mavis Gallant and Elizabeth McCracken's ghost stories "From the Fifteenth District" and "Something Amazing" (two favorites), and magical realism in Gabo's "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings."
ALT Photo of Little Angel puppet theater's production of "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," by Gabriel García Márquez
And, if we have time, we'll do paragraph-level read of the opening to Chekhov's novella "The Black Monk" and the bravura reality-warping passage from Carmen Maria Machado's "Mothers." (WandaVision should be writing her checks IMO)
ALT Illustration by G.K. Savitsky of Anton Chekhov's "The Black Monk," showing our overworked and nervous protagonist at his writing desk.

“Only a Church that is prepared to find itself enriched by the encounter with creation’s diversity can call itself catholic.” @mrbruff describes the enduring ambiguities of queer Catholicism.

goooorgeous work from @mrbruff: "Do I like girls? Do I like being a girl? Taste and see. Try again."
With the Vatican’s willingness to bless same-sex unions and a green(ish) light for transgender baptism, has the Catholic Church mellowed on LGBTQ doctrine? Or is it the Inquisition in drag? @mrbruff investigates.

I’m thrilled to have this piece in @thebafflermag today, on the Vatican’s exquisite ambiguities on queerness and its place in the Catholic Church. (With an enthusiastic detour into @meakoopa’s astonishing queer gospel DAYSPRING)
