We Don't Collect Assets → Written by curator, @gallegosfer In the world of NFTs it’s easy to misunderstand the reasons we collect art. Things increase and decrease in value so much and so fast that we stop seeing the pieces as works of art and we see them as assets. But that’s not the reason we collect. We collect because we like the thing, and because we want the artists to keep working, to keep digging into whatever it is they are in the process of finding, because we appreciate it, and because we need them to keep doing it. Art is like any other job in the world and we keep forgetting it. When we go to a doctor it’s because we know we need something from them, they know some things and they investigate others, we may have an idea of whatever they look for, but they have the knowledge, the disposition and the sensibility to find it. Of course in some professions that which the professional does is obvious, in art it should be too, the artist looks for that which we risk losing when we lose ourselves in the systems of society. To put it simply: if you work too much, if you get too immersed in whatever is the flow of society, you risk depersonalization, you start losing notion of what’s behind and beyond the regular actions you do every day, and sometimes we don’t have the ability to see it even if we feel the lack of it so strongly. That’s where the artist comes. The artist’s job is looking for it, for what makes us human, the artist investigates that link that connects any single one of us to nature, to whatever existence is. The artist tries again and again and the act of them doing so helps us remember that there’s something behind all of this that connects us one another. They may not find it every day, but the fact that they keep trying helps keep the cracks open, the cracks that allow us to get a glimpse into it, the thing that makes us human. It’s strange to me the way we know how important it is to us and the way it’s so easy to dismiss. Life is dragging us all hard, so hard that we forget that we actually can sit down, relax and think. We forget sometimes that we are all philosophers and that part of our jobs as human beings is to think and help each other stay grounded. The work of the artist is to help us remember. And even if not everyone, and not always, notices it, it still has a huge effect on us, because even if you think you don’t like art, you still have a favorite song, a favorite movie, a favorite tv series or a notebook somewhere full of doodles. Sometimes we take it for granted, and think artists will always do art regardless of our support to them. And maybe that’s the case, but I think it’s decent to sometimes remember that we can support their work, the same way we pay a doctor because we appreciate their knowledge and their act of digging into the mastery of what’s wrong with our body, I think we can appreciate the philosopher and the artist for the act of digging into what’s going on with our minds, our souls.
