It reads the wallpaper underneath in slices, so the strands darken over bright patches and lighten over dark ones. No unreadable band on a white photo.
What it deliberately doesn't do: temperatures and fans (they need a privileged helper), notifications, a menu bar item, and anything at all over the network.

So the setting people mention most in the app I built is the one I almost cut before release.
