We were deeply troubled by the shooting targeting the Rahma Islamic Centre in Winnipeg last week. We wanted to advise the community that our Diversity and Resource Relations Unit, Community Safety Services, and frontline officers have been actively engaging with local faith institutions, community leaders, and community organizations. Out of an abundance of caution, community feedback, and to provide ongoing reassurance, there has been an increased police presence at mosques and other religious institutions across Ottawa. This violent act, directed at Muslims as they gathered in prayer, has a deep impact on Ottawa's Muslim communities and around the world. We understand that incidents such as this can create anxiety and uncertainty. We share in your concern and stand continue to stand firmly beside you. Everyone has the fundamental right to gather, practice their faith, and live openly without fear. Acts of hatred and intolerance have no place in our city. We remain fully committed to listening, supporting and working alongside Ottawa's Muslim organizations and community leaders to help ensure that every resident feels safe, respected, and supported.
