I am open for work. Contract or full time. I have 10+ years experience as a software engineer. Mostly front-end (React, TypeScript/JavaScript) but also some back end experience (Node, Python, REST, GraphQL). I have experience with AI (LLMs, RAG, Fine-Tuning). I have been an individual contributor and have led teams at both large companies and startups. I have also spoken at many conferences and produced hundreds of hours of software engineering video content. DMs are open. Retweets are greatly appreciated.

Hot take: AI Assistants are failing us Despite the buzz, closed-domain AI assistants are falling short. Without reliable, context-aware responses, they’re not ready for serious business use. Where AI Assistants Fail Here’s a scenario from a well known sales assistant that’s out there today: 📊 User Query: “What’s the length of my average sales cycle?” ➡️ Assistant Response: “I calculated the average sales cycle length for your opportunities, but there are no results to show.” The assistant can’t perform a computation. Why? Let’s break it down. 🛑 The Issue: Closed-domain AI assistants rely heavily on search-first RAG methods, making them unsuitable for high-trust applications. Consider a task like “Find all emails from last week that need follow-ups.” A search-based AI might skip important messages if they lack specific keywords, leaving critical follow-ups unnoticed. When this incomplete data is passed to the language model, the result is unreliable, making these assistants ill-suited for nuanced business queries. ✅ The Solution: Agentic query planning. Instead of rigid keyword search, assistants should gather all relevant emails and then use an LLM to classify follow-ups—just as a person would—ensuring accuracy. That’s why our AI lab built PromptQL - an agentic, data access API for your AI! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to ⤵️

Ugh. Kinda frustrated with state of usefulness of AI apps. Why is building domain specific assistants not more of a thing? Seems like they would just be immediately useful as internal or personal apps at the very least. Like ChatGPT or Claude but with domain specific artifacts connected to specific domain tools. Ranging from email / calendar or knowledge extraction / data entry or complex multistep retrieval Can replace a lot of dashboards and workflows so easily…. Any important unread emails for me today? Do we have SSO enabled for this user? Based on our docs, what info do I need from the user to help them enable it? Are any of X, Y, Z high priority business problems for this opportunity based on the last few calls and add whichever ones are as the right fields in salesforce? What’s so hard about this?

[use-case 1] If you're using GraphQL for "just batching API calls", building GraphQL ought to be much much simpler. Write a function -> get an unconnected schema Specify a relationship between two functions -> get a connected schema There's no reason it can't feel as easy as REST. You just need a better framework. @trpcio skipped relationships and went all in on just batching and that server implementation feels easy. the best @grpcio frameworks feel like that. [use-case 2] If you're using GraphQL to make APIs free as possible, well, you need to implement a query planner. Because that's what a human being does when they build each endpoint by hand. Linkedin built theirs off calcite. Goldman built legend ground-up. Choose the right tool for the right vision of what you want. Building a GraphQL server that doesn't optimize for either 1 or 2 gives you the worst of both. The pervasive lack of performance with an implementation complexity cherry on top.
