London has enough homes. They're just the wrong sort of homes. Build more social housing.

Tonight's Newsnight focused on the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster:
Victoria Derbyshire, "How could anybody think it could be alright to have a quarter of a mile high slurry - that was notorious for sliding - above a school?"
Jeff Edwards, one of the three then 8 year old survivors, "The reason the tips were on there, it was the cheapest land"
My view:
On 21 October 1966, 144 people died in Aberfan, including 116 children.
The tribunal’s finding was unequivocal: blame rested with the National Coal Board. It said the disaster “could and should have been prevented.” Yet no one was prosecuted. Lord Robens, the NCB chairman, offered to resign, but the government refused to accept it. Officials criticised by the tribunal were moved to other work within the Board.
The NCB paid £500 for each child killed. The public had raised around £1.75 million to support the bereaved and the village, but the fund was then required to contribute £150,000 towards clearing the remaining tips above Aberfan. That money was not repaid until 1997.
So the families were left to live with an avoidable loss, a compensation payment many regarded as derisory, and a long fight for accountability.
The inquiry named the institution responsible. But no individual was prosecuted, and even money donated to help the community was used to pay for work that should never have been its burden.

The Tories have chased Reform so far to the right on Europe that we will likely see more people like Andrew leaving the party.
I know many residents in Kensington & Bayswater are deeply concerned about this reckless position on the ECHR.
We should be building a closer partnership with Europe, not burning the bridges we have.

Left: Winston Marshall. Guitarist. Father, Sir Paul Marshall, co-owns GB News. On Fox News suggested a mine-laden ‘floating wall’ in the Channel to stop small-boat crossings
Right: Dr. Faiza Shaheen, an economist, academic, writer and political campaigner focused on inequality, social mobility and public policy.

What was the outcome of Palantir’s legal action against the Mayor?
It didn’t establish unlawful action or policy, or that the decision should be overturned.
Nor did it secure the contract or recover its costs.
Those are the facts.

For the first time, the British government has acknowledged that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
So who did BBC Newsnight invite on to discuss what happened? Sergei Markov, Putin’s former spokesman.
Par for the course, says Nerve co-founder @carolecadwalla…

No shit Sherlock!
The head of MI5, Ken McCallum, has now publicly confirmed that Russia did attempt to interfere in the 2016 Brexit referendum 👉through anti-EU coverage on RT and Sputnik and through troll and fake social-media activity.
Nigel Farage appeared on Kremlin-funded Russia Today at least 17 times between 2010 and 2014. He did not deny being paid.
McCallum says the observable impact appears to have been limited and stresses the difference between attempted interference and proven effect on the final result. That caveat matters.
But it also exposes the weakness in the political line that there was simply no evidence of Russian interference.
🚨 There was interference.
And that brings us back to the legal point @JMPSimor made: the integrity of a democratic process is not always judged solely by proving exactly how many votes were changed.
We already had proven electoral-law breaches around the referendum campaign. We already had Theresa May’s own barrister telling the Court of Appeal that she was fully aware of the notorious facts and decided to continue regardless.
Now MI5 confirms Russia also tried to interfere.
So: What did the British state know, when did it know it, and why was there never a full statutory investigation before Parliament and government treated the referendum as the political mandate for Brexit?
That is why a public inquiry under the Inquiries Act 2005 now looks increasingly urgent.
Documents. Intelligence assessments. Cabinet papers. Witnesses under oath. The complete Article 50 decision-making trail.
Because “we cannot prove precisely how many votes Russia changed” is not the same proposition as “the democratic process was safe and sound.”

Of all the people who could cast some light on this subject, BBC Newsnight chose…Putin’s former spokesman?
"It's a direct lie... Either Prime Minister Burnham is lying, or the intelligence service of Great Britain."
Former Putin spokesperson Sergei Markov says that the PM's claim that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum is "absolutely a clear lie."

When I met Angela Rayner to campaign for change to overly aggressive council tax debt collection, with its unprecedented rapid escalation to balliffs, she nodded like most politicians do.
I explained it was destructive for individuals, councils and the economy. She listened more then said she'd change it. I was sceptical. Yet a consultation was launched within weeks and delightfully the change announced within 18mths (its in place from next April) - bullet train pace for politics.
I've a rule that if I campaign for a politician (of any party) to do something, and they do it, I say thank you. Its important to recognise it. So thank you so much Angela Rayner for listening and more importantly acting. The changes coming are a great start.
I promised we'd make council tax fairer, and I’m getting on with the job.
Too many working people have seen council tax debt spiral before they had the chance to get help.
That's why we're introducing more time to pay, clearer warnings if you miss a payment and more support from councils.
Thanks to @MartinSLewis and @mmhpi for their tireless campaigning to make this change happen.

When we started responding to Russia’s operation against our data centers, and when our strikes reached Yandex’s data centers, it suddenly became a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms. A lot of people noticed it. There was less hate, less division, and fewer provocations.
Because there were fewer bots. And it’s pretty clear where those bots were coming from – if they disappeared when Yandex went offline. This proves, again and again, that Europe is not the source of the problems. Europe is not the one making everything more difficult.
Most importantly, we need people in America, every morning, when the day in Europe is already moving toward evening, to really see what is happening. To see the truth.

The news of the handing over of the charging files to the Crown Prosecution Service, is not a 'milestone' for the families of the deceased. It only serves to reiterate the original sin of the injustice - the decision to prioritise the Inquiry over immediate criminal investigations which which allowed the delays, the evidence contestation and created opportunity for blame shifting.
We ask the Prime Minister to open the files, order a review and uphold the transparency we expect from this government, for the decisions made that delayed, derailed and denied our justice. That is the beginning of the road to justice. That would be a milestone.

🇬🇧 Labour surges if it backs rejoining the EU 🇪🇺
A recent poll found that Labour support could rise substantially if the party committed to pursuing UK membership of the European Union. Under the hypothetical scenario, Labour reaches 37% of the vote.
That compares with 24% for Labour in the latest YouGov Westminster voting intention poll, a difference of 13 percentage points. In that latest poll, Reform UK narrowly leads Labour by 25% to 24%. YouGov
📊 IF LABOUR SUPPORTS EU MEMBERSHIP (Compared to latest YouGov Poll)
🔴 Labour (S&D) 37% (+13%)
🩵 Reform UK 26% (+1%)
🔵 Conservatives (ECR) 16% (-3%)
🟠 LibDems (Renew) 7% (-5%)
🟢 Greens (Greens/EFA) 8% (-3%)
⚪ Other 6% (-3%)
The YouGov research tested several possible Labour approaches towards Europe, including maintaining closer relations under its existing lines, joining a Customs Union, joining the Single Market and pursuing full EU membership. Of the options tested, EU membership produced the highest Labour vote share. Best for Britain
🗳️ Should Labour eventually campaign for the UK to rejoin the European Union? 🇬🇧🇪🇺

My personal opinion is that the general voting public saw this as a vote against the then Conservative government and completely missed the point that It was not a general election but a decision to leave the EU.
BREXIT : I would like to ask a cross section of the public some simple questions.
1. Do you feel you was mislead to by Johnson and Gove about the benefits of Brexit .
2. Should we have left the EU.
3. Have you seen any benefit being out the EU.
4. Have you or your business suffered in anway .
5. Would you like to rejoin the EU
Please give honest answers and no jokers please

The Metropolitan police has passed charging files to the CPS within the timeframe they said they would. We thank them for their service.
But the entire process, and our rightful expectation for justice of the manslaughter of 72 of our kin, and the devastation to the community immediately around Grenfell Tower, and the repercussions that we are still dealing with, was delayed, derailed and denied by the Tory Government of the day with Theresa May the Prime Minister who took the singular and unprecedented decision to put the Inquiry process before the criminal investigation.
THAT single fact has not only cost us our justice, but it has cost the taxpayer over half a billion pounds, and created a multi million pound Grenfell Injustice industry that continues to monetize the disaster that took the lives of our parents, partners, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren.
And they want us to trust the process?
We are asking this government to give us the transparency we need. Open the files. Now that would be justice.
