Peter Bentley's covers for Penguin's 1973 series of Evelyn Waugh novels. Bentley, along with Michael Farrell and Stewart Burnett set the direction for British graphic design in the early 1970s, influenced in part by the work of Push Pin Studios in the US. Formalism was out, eclecticism was in and both Art Nouveau and Art Deco were firmly back on the menu. David Pelham had taken over from Alan Aldridge as art director for Penguin Books, and he did an excellent job of keeping the new style within some formal boundaries for the publisher. The Penguin 'look' of the early 1970s is one of the high points of book cover design; varied but still elegant, playful but not completely riotous.

The movie COMBAT SHOCK (1986, Buddy Giovinazzo) is a pretty dark and depressing movie that deals with PTSD, drug addiction, etc and then all of a sudden, at about the 25 minute mark our protagonist takes a stroll to one of the most completely bonkers songs I have heard in a movie

Bumping into this fantastic Billy Bang LP in Miami was an unexpected stroke of luck. Wilber Morris (Butch's brother), Don Cherry (they do two Ornette tunes), and the incomparable Denis Charles, whose solo to open Maat is a fuckin skullcracker. So damn good. Copped w. a quickness!

The Racetrack In France that inspired the song of the same name by Gil Scott-Heron and the Midnight Band: The Riviera '76 Jazz-Rock Festival at Circuit Paul Ricard, Le Castellet ("a racetrack near Marseilles"), where GSB&tMB played alongside a crazy lineup... 📷Eric Huybrechts

For those who are unsure about McCoy Tyner's musicality, and can't just hear it plainly for yourself, I recommend reading this, and then we can talk. taju.uniarts.fi/server/api/c…
