Our review on transthalamic pathways is now out in @CommsBio.
We discuss emerging evidence they contribute to perception and decision-making, and why it remains so difficult to isolate their function behaving animals.
Studying circuit function is hard.

For years, neuroscientists faced a choice: record what a neuron does in a living animal, or read its molecular identity postmortem. Same cells, both readouts, at scale? Out of reach.
TRU-FACT closes that gap. 🧵

What is the nature of sensory prediction error signals in the neocortex?
Our research published in @Nature reveals that these error signals are amplified responses to unexpected inputs, mediated by a cooperative thalamocortical circuit mechanism! 1/4

Are we too cortex exclusive? 🧠
We found that perceptual decisions depend on a cortical pathway through thalamus (transthalamic), even though corticocortical projections are intact.
Transthalamic pathways thus play a major but underappreciated role in perception.

Big thanks to Claire McKinnon and Murray Sherman for seeing this through.
This work was a collaboration between the @TheFlorey Institute and the University of Chicago.
