Great work happening over at @SDSearchlight. My whole schtick is the "simplified" version of local news, but so many stories deserve an in-depth treatment that only a place like Searchlight can do. Glad to be part of a local news ecosystem that includes these lovely folks:
Today is the two-year anniversary of @SDSearchlight.
I work remote, so I’ve likely lost a few social skills since then. But I’ve regained a sense of purpose and done the kind of work I wanted to but often couldn’t do in corporate media.

YAY! Nancy and @AustinVida are doing such amazing work that it makes me wish I lived in Austin. Congrats, dear friend! Keep kicking ass and taking names in the local news scene. <3

Comprehensive, balanced, warts-and-all look at Walz, informed by years of experience from a reporter on the ground in Minnesota.
If you read one story about MN Gov. Tim Walz's accession, it should be this one by @jpcoolican, who's covered Walz since he was in Congress: minnesotareformer.com/2024/0… via @MNReformer
I've been saying for years that the Axios model is just a wolf (i.e. corporate media) in sheep's clothing.
If you want local news, you have to pay someone in your community to write it. These big, scalable corporate media companies - esp. aggregators - are not the future.
NEW: Axios is laying off 50 people across the company. CEO @JimVandeHei just sent out this note — which says the layoffs are because of “changes in the media business”
Love knowing I'm not the only one out there reporting with this setup!
That said, I still wish myself and other parents had the societal supports that would mean we didn't have to juggle everything all at once like this.
Ohhhh ok, cool. I get it now.
When you're a kid, summer is a vacation.
When you *have* kids, summer is a constant hellscape of trying to balance maintaining summer fun and being driven up the #*&%@# wall by a constant chorus of "MOM, I'M BORED."
The line between "I need coffee to function," and "I've had too much caffeine to focus" is wayyyyyyy to thin.
Today I learned the average typing speed is 40 words per minute...how do you get anything done in a day typing that slowly?
I don't...I can't...that's just so wild to me. There are folks taking a full minute to write a tweet??

I don't love it, but I do have respect for anyone who can keep a toddler's attention for more than 0.02 seconds.
My 4-year-old looked at the very cluttered desktop on my laptop and said, "Hey mom...do you think you wanna donate some of that stuff?"
Good girl. Anyone seeking 5,243 jpgs that I no longer need?
I feel like I need to give myself a little treat every time I send an email listing my actual ad prices without undercutting myself by going all midwestern like, "but I can give you a discount if needed, I'm super flexible. Honestly you're a friend. I should just do it for free."

My pop culture hot take of the day: The Bluey fandom is really verging on Taylor Swift-fandom territory with its speculation/predictions/theories after yesterday's new episode.
It's giving cult.

Hey, @sfsimplified told me what I already knew, that turnout at the precinct I worked on April 9 was abysmal (and oh goody I'll be back behind the table April 30). Find out who DID vote here: sfsimplified.com/did-your-ne…
