“The river is such a part of life here. It’s just not the kind of thing that somebody who’s from here would say: ‘Oh, let’s wall ourself off from the river,'" says Frank Briscoe, an architectural conservator who owns land just north of the San Ygnacio Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary. texasmonthly.com/news-politi…

My story –– a records pull suggests Barnard only started communicating with the state AFTER a @mkcant story teased agreements between CBP & Trans Pecos Ice for housing, mining and water. (None of that stuff showed up in the docs, just the use of a shed.) bigbendsentinel.com/2026/07/…

Got a comment from a CBP spokesperson on this today: "The smart wall interactive map is being updated and will go live again shortly. Due to the ongoing DHS shutdown and the resulting strain on resources, some updates may take slightly longer than usual."
Replying to @travisbubenik
Adding to the confusion: a map of border wall projects randomly disappeared from a CBP website last week and is still gone this morning - though it's apparently still active at this separate link: experience.arcgis.com/experi…

The Trump admin has a new tactic to try to speed up border wall construction in the RGV. They're offering landowners a "signing bonus" to begin building before the years-long eminent domain process plays out -- and with no guarantee it will. texasobserver.org/trump-new-… via @jlbuch
