40 years ago tonight, David Simon brought a bottle of alcohol up to the BPD homicide unit as a gift. He was thinking of writing a column about Christmas Eve in the unit. Simon hung out all night and eventually the bottle got opened. Around 4 am detective Bill Lansey said, “Man, the shit that goes on up here, you could write a book.” Five years later “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets” would be published.
