Among 748 breast cancer patients followed for an average of 20.2 months:
MISTLETOE: 54% lower risk of death
IV VITAMIN C: 44% lower risk of death
Both associations remained statistically significant after adjustment for major clinical factors, including metastasis, chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and other complementary treatments.
MISTLETOE was administered subcutaneously (0.02–20 mg) once or twice weekly for at least 3 months.
Its active compounds may stimulate natural killer (NK) cells and T-lymphocytes, activate caspase-mediated cancer-cell apoptosis, and suppress VEGF-driven tumor angiogenesis.
IV VITAMIN C was administered intravenously at 10–100 grams once or twice weekly for at least 3 months.
Vitamin C generates hydrogen peroxide that may selectively destroy cancer cells, modulates inflammatory cytokines and mitochondrial function, and influences anticancer gene regulation.
