Canada had serious problems before Trump came along: stagnant productivity, and an inability to fix it because of regional obstructionism. Those problems come to a head in Alberta's sececession referendum Monday. Carney is using the crisis of Trump to fix the economy and neutralize regional dissent. wsj.com/world/americas/how-t…

Question for the post-literacy debate: how is our new oral culture going to be shaped by AI? AI model personalities are very literate: careful, detail oriented, objective, etc. Possibly that negative effects of phone culture are weakened by that? Cc @TheStalwart #ongheads
Zaid did a stellar job explaining this on @today_explained
Why is America's far right obsessed with Indians all of a sudden? I spoke to Indian Americans in Texas and elsewhere looking for an answer. Plus: Recent evidence that white flight is happening in American schools -- away from Asians. vox.com/politics/505248/texa…

In @WSJ, my profile of Seattle's new mayor and how ambitions have met reality:
- Wilson officials asked to staff Little Saigon's open-air drug market with police 24/7 but was told there weren't enough officers
- Wilson promised 4,000 shelter units—2x her predecessor's goal—ignoring campaign advisers who warned the figure was unrealistic
- Wilson opposed expanding @SeattlePD's camera network—but is now moving toward turning more cameras on
- $3M for tiny homes from Seattle businesses went unused as City Hall struggled through bureaucratic hurdles

Oh, you're worried about a Jewish guy's apocalyptic cult? You're scandalized that they consort with prostitutes? You think their message of compassion for everyone threatens normal bonds of family, community, and nation? Should we throw you a party? Should we invite Pontius Pilate?

on the one hand its deeply disturbing to have to look ira glass in the eyes like this and I feel ashamed he has to stoop to making vertical videos at all. on the other hand I am now going to listen to this episode.
Some NPR podcasts started getting mysterious comments on Spotify. They made no sense to the staff reading them – until someone from a younger generation cracked the code.

Mamdani: “If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right
This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.
“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”
“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”
Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.

Nearly every day toward the end of my tenure at The Washington Post, someone would complain to me about Jeff Bezos' changes. His decimation of the local news team. His abandonment of DC sports coverage. The shriveled Bezos opinion page, with the ideological diversity of a doorknob.
Today, The Washington Sun launches. It has made enormous new investments: +110 newsroom staff; DC's legendary food columnist; truly the best DMV reporters; a beloved weather blog; a growing roster of columnists; tons of worldclass reporters across many national beats; and also me.
The Washington Sun will not be perfect. We will write stories that you find annoying, dumb, or misinformed. I will make mistakes (& tell me if I do - [email protected]!). But at a time where investments in reporting are evaporating, I'm so excited The Sun is hiring real journalists doing real reporting.
If you want to help, I would love if you signed up for our (free!) newsletters, which routinely get genuinely rave reviews:
