Fitting deep neural networks on the input-output function of many neurons with different morphologies and biophyiscal properties allows us to study the source of their complexity
It turns out that more elaborate dendrites, more NMDA, and steeper NMDA nonlinearity are the main contributors to a neuron's I/O complexity
Also, it appears that human neurons just happen to possess much larger and elaborate dendrites, higher levels of NMDA ion channels and the human variant of the NMDA ion channel has a steeper non linearity.
Almost feels like a few hyperparameters were deliberately tuned
Our work comparing the I/O complexity of different neurons is published in PNAS!
We know human neurons are larger than rat neurons, but are they more functionally complex?

Happy to share my new open source tool for exploring connected neurons in the #MICrONS dataset (thanks @AllenInstitute, again) It's in the browser, online & free. No login or install required. 1/

What is the difference between excitatory and inhibitory neurons?
Beyond the obvious difference of neurotransmitter effect on postsynaptic cell, another remarkable difference is the fact that excitatory neurons have lots of spines, while inhibitory neurons have less spines. 1/13

What makes human pyramidal neurons uniquely suited for complex information processing? How can human neurons’ distinct properties contribute to our advanced cognitive abilities?

🧠 Updated my open-source SWC Neuron Morphology Editor (runs directly in-browser!)—now with 3D views & custom segment colors (e.g., toggle axons). Demo uses @AllenInstitute MICrONS data. Can't wait to animate neurons for talks!

Human cortical pyramidal neurons are larger, exhibit more complex branching patterns, and feature distinctly nonlinear biophysical properties compared to rat cortical pyramidal neurons.
Do these unique characteristics make human neurons more functionally complex?
Would that enhance the capability of the human brain to perform complex computational tasks?
Is this what makes us human?
In our new preprint (see below) with @danielayoeli, @DavidBeniaguev, Christiaan de Kock, @mikilon, and @Segev_Lab we use deep learning to tackle these questions by comparing the complexity of neurons’ input-output (I/O) functions using our newly developed Functional Complexity Index (FCI) tool. Congrats to my friend and colleague Guosong Hong for his stunning and original discovery, published today in Science, on clearing tissues *in living animals* with a common food dye!
The dye is tartrazine, used in Doritos!

I'm excited to share the publication of @GalAtlan 's final PhD project.
Title is accurate for the take-home message, yet, there is a lot more to the paper, including the association of claustrum activity to individual variance in strategy. Check it out:

Mazal Tov, Haim!!! 🍾
@HSompolinsky
And congratulation Larry!!! 🥂
Yesterday, we had the immense pleasure of celebrating neuroscience as we awarded Professors @HSompolinsky, Terrence Sejnowski, and Larry Abbott with #TheBrainPrize2024 medals for their pioneering contributions to the fields of computational and theoretical neuroscience. Thank you to all who attended, and a special thank you to HM The King of Denmark, the Danish Minister for Higher Education and Science @christinaegelun, @lundbeckfonden, and the chair of our selection committee, Richard Morris.

Compare a typical brain with a typical modern day datacenter
The datacenter mostly runs Artificial Intelligence applications, the brain mostly runs regular intelligence applications
The datacenter consumes the power of a small town, the brain consumes the occasional banana

If you’re curious about whether and how you can use waveform and spiking information to predict the cell-type of an extracellularly recorded neuron, 1) yes you can, and 2) check out our preprint to find out! We cracked it for the major cell types of the cerebellum cortex. 1/5 🧵
