Always Sejanus to me. And Karla, of course! RIP.
Most of my school friends were introduced to him as Captain Picard, so they were very confused when I said, “No, no, that’s Sejanus!” RIP Sir Patrick.

Excellent summary by @daisychristo of the basic purpose of a universal secular education system. Of course it goes beyond this too, but this is the core of it.

My life quite often feels like this, to be honest… 😂
Your day will be like... a haul of fish, fresh from net, dumped on a beach, wishing for the waters but the sun beats the life out of them. Odyssey 22.383-9

Terrible biased reporting from @MeganGorrey at @smh. They give a megaphone to the defenders of privilege and inequality and tiny paragraphs to the majority of Sydneysiders who want a solution to the affordability crisis. smh.com.au/national/nsw/a-sy…

Re the appalling Helen Haines attack, and the surge of barrow-pusher opportunism that has followed: Sometimes a random nutter is just a random nutter. Indications suggest this was the case here. Social media is not to blame for everything.

The sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing things well and being able to use that knowledge effectively is not something AI is ever likely to offer. So there’s a goal for education.

Live streaming an execution is utterly barbaric regardless of your views on the death penalty. Young people, mostly men, will watch this footage, like moths to a flame their curiosity will get the better of them. It does really feel like we are going backwards.

Another great blog post by @daisychristo. What she says here about the intellectual atmosphere in Ed circles 10-15 years ago is applicable to Australia as well - particularly in terms of the sniffy dismissal of explicit teaching by the professoriat. substack.nomoremarking.com/p…

From my memory of years in the local AA4 team, this is pretty much spot on. 🤣

Wonderful to see how the rise of AI has presented hardened edubullshitters with yet another opportunity to dredge out all the time-honoured clichés, just adding "something algorithm something". This is a prime specimen of the genre. peterhyman21.substack.com/p/…

Happy 50th Birthday to one of the very greatest TV series of all time. Derek Jacobi as Claudius, George Baker as Tiberius, the always OTT Brian Blessed as Augustus, and above all the magnificent Sian Phillips as Livia - performances for the ages.
I, Claudius, a drama television series set in the Roman Empire starring Derek Jacobi, premieres on BBC2.
