Shinya Tsukamoto's latest film "Mr Nelson, Did You Kill People" got dreadful reviews in Variety and other US trades, and Toho pulled out of distributing it at the last moment, but it's been playing to sold-out houses in Japan for the past two months. FTW
Apparently, the sudden reduction of theaters before the Japanese release of "Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People" was not Toho's decision. The reason for the pull remains shrouded in mystery because the film's actual distributor (not Toho) remains mum.
Re-Animator is one of my top 10 favourite films, so I read Stuart Gordon's autobiography Naked Theater and Uncensored Horror, out from @FAB_Press . Fascinating stuff, especially reading about his Organic theater days. Plus, the book design is gorgeous
Read it on the flights from Tokyo to Vienna, where I'm currently a guest at the Japannual festival

On my recent trip to London for FrightFest, I had the privilege of stepping into the Arrow Video Store to talk about a few films that mean something to me - including the Jackie Chan movie I was in

Radiance brings you a Kon Ichikawa film that never quite got its due but is perhaps more pertinent now than ever
Replying to @FilmsRadiance
UK/US: A bored university student bullies and assaults his classmates in Kon Ichikawa’s dark and divisive PUNISHMENT ROOM.
Receiving its first ever Blu-ray release, extras include a new visual essay on the legacy of its original author Shintaro Ishihara.
Next week I will be in Austria at the Japannual festival to talk J-horror. My talk's on 13 October at 5pm at the Filmcasino, and I will be signing my book THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO JAPANESE HORROR MOVIES afterward

Speaking of The Frightfest Guide to Japanese Horror Movies, I was delighted to hand a copy to the author of the book's foreword, Mr Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Two new books on Shinya Tsukamoto are coming out: the visual compendium below and the final book by the recently departed and greatly missed Roberta Novielli. The latter is only in Italian (for now), but I'll be getting both.
The ORIGINS OF J-HORROR box was long in the making, but here it is, thanks to the hard work of @jaspersharp and @SarahAppleton_. Glad to have made several contributions to this set of pioneering and hugely influential films.

Side note, the @Unearthedfilms release of Tetsuo: The Bullet Man includes a “multi-format” version of the film that is the entire movie, but only uses behind the scenes, storyboards, sketches, and stills.
Kind of an incredible insight into Tsukamoto’s filmmaking process.
