On the night of 3 June 2017, London was attacked. Three terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, then ran into the streets around Borough Market armed with knives. Ignacio Echeverría, a 39 year old lawyer from Spain, had moved to London for work and was an anti money laundering analyst at HSBC. That evening he had been skateboarding with two friends, and they were cycling to Borough Market for dinner when they rode straight into the horror. They saw a man attacking a police officer who lay on the ground. Then the attacker turned on a woman. Ignacio didn’t run. He jumped off his bike, grabbed the only thing he had, his skateboard, and charged. He struck the attacker again and again, drawing his attention long enough for several people to get to safety .Standing alongside PC Wayne Marques and off duty PC Charlie Guenigault, he then went after a second attacker who was going for another officer. Two attackers turned on him and he was stabbed in the back. Even on the ground, he tried to shield himself with his skateboard. A young off duty doctor fought to save him, but Ignacio lost his life that night. He was one of eight innocent people taken in the attack. The woman he defended survived. For days afterwards, his family searched London’s hospitals, desperately hoping to find him alive. In 2018, Ignacio was posthumously awarded the George Medal for confronting armed terrorists to protect others. His parents received it from Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace .Spain honoured him too, and skate parks across the country now bear his name. His father said he wanted the world to remember Ignacio as a good man who cared more about others than himself.
