We're building the world’s largest open-access repository for documented heritage. And we are raising the capital to make this happen.
One mission: To redefine how ancient Indian manuscripts and inscriptions are preserved and accessible in the digital age. And offer true open-source DPI to scholars, institutions, and the world.
Mission: Beyond Digitization
Step 1: We are actively engineering the foundation—machine-readable knowledge graphs, Unicode-compliant cataloging, and standardized metadata schemas.
Step 2: This is where you come in.
We're looking for the visionary partners who can fund or build this with us.
Philanthropists, archival engineers, digital humanities pioneers, and tech builders.
If you're obsessed with where our history is headed, not just where it's been—we want to talk!

How much longer will we wait to realize that archival preservation is not a cultural hobby?

This is the risk of handing our civilizational memory over to foreign software that accepts no local liability.
Before India can build truly indigenous AI, we must first secure the foundational digital ecosystem.
A foreign AI tool wiped 15% of Bengaluru’s heritage records in 4 minutes — 8th-century inscriptions, gone. India needs its own digital archive, not borrowed infrastructure. dhunt.in/15rNPz

MIDF is presenting at ( Bharatiya Traditional Knowledge Systems ) BTKS 2026 at IIT Dharwad this September 5–6.
Our session will explore the role of technology and robust digitization frameworks in preserving India’s manuscript and epigraphic heritage.
Open to researchers, technologists, and delegates. Spot registrations are available at the venue.

India may hold around 10 million manuscripts. Yet to research our own history, we often depend on fragmented archives and foreign-owned databases.
MIDF is working to change that.
Through Smriti, it is building an indigenous, Unicode, AI-ready digital infrastructure to bring India's manuscripts and inscriptions into one searchable ecosystem.
Not just scanning old pages.
Digitisation. OCR. Transcription. Metadata. Semantic search. Data that researchers and future AI systems can actually work with.
Our civilisational memory should not merely survive on shelves. It should be searchable, accessible and owned by India.
Hindu Fund is backing MIDF to build that infrastructure.

Places like Socotra pose a unique challenge and opportunity for archival engineering. A single location housing Sanskrit, South Arabian, Aksumite, Greek, and Syriac scripts requires complex, multi-lingual metadata frameworks to process accurately.
Building the digital infrastructure to turn these inscriptions into accessible, interoperable data is what MIDF is solving for.
Anyone building in epigraphic or digital humanities space ? Actively looking to partner with researchers and technologists. DM or reach out to [email protected].
Without unified Indian repository, our researchers & institutions are forced to rely on foreign owned databases to access our own history
We arent building charity, we are building an open access digital infrastructure

Most heritage preservation fails because it’s treated like a charity project instead of a hard data engineering problem.
We are building a unicode, AI-ready digital infrastructure to archive centuries of manuscripts and inscriptions at scale.
We are opening strategic support for international backers and patrons outside India who want to fund high-conviction digital infrastructure.

In the AI era, digitization alone is no longer enough.
The larger opportunity is to turn Bharat’s vast civilizational knowledge into a living knowledge layer that can power research, education and future AI systems.
This is also about strategic advantage. AI will increasingly shape what societies know, remember and believe. If our knowledge is fragmented, poorly represented or interpreted mainly through external datasets, bias gets encoded at the foundation.
An Atmanirbhar and Sovereign AI future needs its own trusted knowledge infrastructure.
@midf_org is on a mission to help build that foundation by connecting, structuring and making Indian Knowledge Systems usable for the AI era.
Bharat has the corpus, the depth and the intellectual inheritance. The window to build this is now.
If you are working on manuscripts, Indic knowledge, AI, language technologies or open knowledge infrastructure, we would love to hear from you.

Gyan Bharatam is spending crores to scan India’s manuscripts, but scans alone don’t make knowledge usable.
The committee is now calling for a tech overhaul.
MIDF is already building it:
✅ Searchable
✅ Structured
✅ Research-ready knowledge infrastructure

Digitization without structured metadata is just storage—not accessibility.
We have moved from concept to platform, building the digital backbone for Bharat's heritage.
Repository Snapshot:
2,107 Manuscripts
981 Inscriptions
11+ Languages
39+ Dynasties
We aren't just scanning pages—we're making 10M+ historical records searchable & scalable.
Read Update II: midfoundation.substack.com/p…
We just turned another 526 static inscriptions into a living research instrument, taking our total to 698 inscriptions and 2107 Manuscripts.
Our Pratnakirti team digitized more volumes of Epigraphia Indica, adding 48,300+ fields of metadata to Smriti so historians can query centuries of history in seconds.
Every inscription is now fully searchable and filterable across 39+ dynasties, multiple scripts, and materials. Smriti now houses 698 inscriptions & 2,107 manuscripts across 11+ languages.

This isn't AI. This isn't a stock photo.
This is India's civilisational memory being preserved. At Karnataka University, Dharwad, the Manuscripts & Inscriptions Digitization Foundation (@midf_org ) has already digitized 4,500 bundles of palm-leaf manuscripts. Next comes 3,500+ bundles of priceless paper manuscripts.
Every scanned page protects knowledge that survived for centuries.

600 years ago, ancient India legally banned dowry.
Think social reform in India is a modern concept? Think again.
Virinchipuram Inscription (1425 CE) proves that the Vijayanagara Empire took a fierce stand against the commercialization of marriage
The community assembly banned both kanyâśulka (bride-price) and varadakshina (dowry).
⚖️Penalty: Anyone buying or selling a bride faced royal punishment and social exclusion.
Purpose: To uphold the dignity and honour of women through consensus and debate.
Indian tradition wasn’t rigid—it was built on evolution, ethics, and reform.

A 655-year-old Indian water policy still survives today.
Why?
Because it was carved in stone.
Now think about the millions of manuscripts that weren't.
Ancient India recorded breakthroughs in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, governance, and philosophy. Much of that knowledge is fading away faster than we can preserve it.
@midf_org is racing against time to digitize India's civilizational archive before it disappears forever.
This isn't charity.
It's a rescue mission for India's memory.

Thanks to you, ₹10 Lakhs+ is now at work preserving and sharing India’s written heritage. We are just getting started. Let’s keep the momentum going!
Let’s keep going!
Something most people don't know:
India holds the largest written record of any civilisation.
1 crore manuscripts. 3 lakh inscriptions in stone.
We gave the world zero. Wrote down surgery and calculus centuries before the West did.
Today, less than 1% can be read or searched. The rest is quietly turning to dust.
In the age of AI, knowledge a machine can't read is knowledge the world will never use.
MIDF is working to change that.
