Nordstrom Rack will open next year at 2 Stockton Street, near Union Square! Three years ago, companies were leaving San Francisco. Today, they want to be here, and Nordstrom Rack’s decision to return to the heart of our city is another sign of the growing confidence in San Francisco. The 50,000 square foot Nordstrom Rack is just the latest example of retail coming back downtown.  We're making our streets safer and cleaner, bringing people back downtown, cutting red tape, and creating the conditions for businesses to succeed. I'm thrilled that Nordstrom is choosing to invest in San Francisco again, and look forward to welcoming Nordstrom Rack as we continue building on our city's momentum.

The Mexican Navy’s tall ship Cuauhtémoc has sailed into the San Francisco Bay. The iconic vessel is docked in our city this week as part of their 2026 North Pacific Training Cruise, a 92-day trip to ports along the coasts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Today we welcomed the ship’s crew into City Hall, and wished them good luck and calm waters ahead. If you want to see the ship in the port, come to Piers 15-17 on the Embarcadero before Sunday, September 27. There will be a farewell ceremony on Sunday at 9:30 am before she sets sail at 10 am.

A few years ago, San Francisco had lost its way. Today, crime is down, unsheltered homelessness is at its lowest level in 15 years, visitors are coming back, companies are bringing jobs, and San Franciscans feel our city is moving in the right direction. But too many are asking: Can I still afford to live here? This year, rents have risen more than 25% and more than 1,000 eviction notices have been filed. San Francisco is in a rent emergency. Today we are taking urgent action to help San Franciscans stay in their homes. Working with the Board of Supervisors, City Attorney David Chiu, and leaders across government and communities, we are putting forward a sweeping package to protect renters from eviction and prevent rent spikes. In partnership with Supervisors Danny Sauter, Matt Dorsey, and Jackie Fielder, San Francisco will: ➡️ Protect rent-controlled tenants from sudden spikes by capping combined annual impact of banked rent increases and capital improvement costs at 10% ➡️ Protect renters against evictions when they fall behind by less than one month of rent ➡️ Invest an additional $3 million in Tenant Right to Counsel, so more San Franciscans facing eviction can get full legal representation ➡️ Raise Ellis Act relocation assistance by 25% to reflect the rising cost of finding a new home ➡️ Strengthen enforcement of our tenant protection laws and invest $1 million in a citywide Know Your Rights campaign ➡️ Invest more than $54 million this year in emergency rental assistance, legal defense, and more As we help people stay in their homes today, we must confront what is driving housing costs up in the first place. We need more homes. So we’re doing both: building more housing to make San Francisco more affordable for the future, and keeping people in their homes today. We still have work to do, but people want to be here again—we should welcome them. And to build a lasting recovery, we need the people already here. The people who teach our children, keep us safe, run our restaurants, create our art, start new businesses, and make San Francisco a vibrant city. As our city grows, we should make sure that you can build your future here too.

Kicked off Transit Month at City Hall today. 🚌🚋 Growing up in the Sunset, Muni was simply part of everyday life. I took the L, N, 28, and 71 to school, downtown, and across the city.

Seven major events in four years. The NBA All-Star Game, Laver Cup, Super Bowl 60, and FIFA World Cup have brought energy to our city, while Vogue World, the WNBA All-Star Game, and MLB All-Star Game are coming to San Francisco soon. People across the country and around the world are seeing the momentum in our city and want to bring their events here.   San Francisco has incredible sports teams, we know how to host world-class events, and we’ll keep showing the world that our city is on the rise.

Our San Francisco Unified School District started the new school year yesterday with a lot to be proud of: 🍎 97% of classrooms are staffed with a permanent teacher, compared to 75% just 3 years ago. 🍎 A fully balanced three-year budget was achieved. 🍎 Preliminary 3rd grade reading outcomes increased by 2%, for the first time in 6 years. 🍎 Preliminary 8th grade math outcomes increased by 4%, for the first time in 6 years. This is real progress for our public schools—and a strong start to the new school year. We’ll keep working to make sure every San Francisco student has the opportunity to succeed. – at San Francisco, CA
