It barely featured in the campaign, but it looks like the world’s most powerful economy is about to elect a climate denying authoritarian who hates clean technology. The chances of global temperatures spiralling out of control just increased substantially.

A heat pump as big as a football pitch??? That's what BASF is building in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
It will be the world’s largest industrial heat pump in the world.

This is a great illustration of what the new energy order looks like:
➡️large to small
➡️centralised to decentralised
➡️large grids to microgrids
➡️one-directional to bi-directional
➡️passive consumers to active prosumers
Of course this is simplified and highly stylised but it shows the direction of travel.

Delhi is boiling at 52.3C (126F) today and global heating, on a 3C trajectory, is only going to get [far, far] worse because we’re allowing governments, oil companies, their lobbyists and enablers to slow climate action almost everywhere - and they’ve been at it for 40+ years

My latest column for @LocusMag is "What Kind of Bubble is AI?" All economic bubbles are hugely destructive, but some of them leave behind wreckage that can be salvaged for useful purposes, while others leave nothing behind but ashes:

The big contradiction at the heart of the government's Rwanda obsession is this - how can that country be simultaneously a good place for people to be sent to live their lives and a punishment for crossing the channel that will put them off? The government has argued both sides.

The chances for real progress at COP28 were badly damaged early this year when an oil company CEO was appointed to lead the negotiations. And now investigative journalists have confirmed some of the worst fears of those who criticized that absurd appointment with the shocking news that the President-designate has been using the meetings he has set up with nations around the world to sell more oil and gas. At the same time, the fossil fuel company he leads (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has been preparing to launch one of the largest expansions of oil and gas production of any company in the world — timed to begin immediately after COP28 concludes.
Using international climate talks as leverage to shore up support for pumping more oil and gas at a time when we urgently need to phase out fossil fuels is — to say the least — utterly appalling.

Well humanity, we did it, even if just for one day. Yesterday, Nov. 18, was the first time in recorded history that the global 2m surface temperature breached 2.0°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC baseline.
The long-term average remains below 1.5°C. But not for long.

Heating is the biggest element of emissions for typical UK households. Switching to a heat pump, which reduces heating emissions currently by around two thirds, saves around 2 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum and is therefore one of the biggest climate impacts you can make.

Over the course of their reign of error, the Tories have grown the national debt from £1 trillion to £2.5 trillion.
In the same 13-year period, we have witnessed crumbling schools and hospitals, increasingly leaky water pipes and sewers, and other widespread structural failures.
There have been no big infrastructure projects to point to and say "ah, that's where the money went..."
So from the beginning of time until 2010, the nation debt grew to £1 trillion.
From 2010 until 2023, it grew by an additional £1.5 trillion to £2.5 trillion.
And yet if you look around, you can't really see where most of the money has gone.
Tory cronies must be sleeping on beds made of gold.
Have so few ever stolen so much in so short a time before? The only thing I can think of that might compare was the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Not exactly a great bedfellow.
