Ando’s numerous articles these past few months have shown that virtually all financial arguments for cutting humanities programs are lies. They are the cheapest programs at any university and frequently subsidize the others. It’s trustee and administrative ideology.

The purpose of education is not to outperform a computer; it is to enrich the life that the computer will never have.
Replying to @jonathanbfine
If you couldn't give them neither enough talent to outperform an AI nor a confidence in their ability to outperform an AI, you are an incompetent educator. They should not be called to task for your failure.

horrifying news—insane that college admin assume advanced language study with highly specialized faculty can be replaced by duolingo

i like how the 'most beautiful' poems everyone is sharing are all about being-in-the-world, which remains one of the only things that still matters

Great books leftists: there are dozens of us!
Replying to @OsitaNwanevu
Anyway, my stance on Great Books education has moved from "it's nice if you can get it" to militant support. Just a matter of expanding the canon and establishing that the point isn't indoctrination, but building historical context and introducing the foundations of key concepts.

It’s never too early in the week to admire one of the holiest inventory poems that Anne Carson ever wrote. “God has the book of life open at PLEASURE”

I will say this once again: if someone’s “safety” or “security” requires the mass extermination of a people, then their safety is a genocidal ideology rooted in exceptionalism. It is incompatible with a shared future for humanity.

Starvation, once in motion, even after food & medical care become availabe, remains irreversible for so many of its victims. It's a greater sin than the sin itself to be have spoken only after the sight of skin-on-bones killed Palestinians. An unforgiveable "theology of empire."
