The very first science data taken with #JWST were images of the globular cluster M92. There's a lot of exciting science we can (& will!) do with these images, but they also provide a great opportunity to test the calibration of the NIRCam instrument: arxiv.org/abs/2209.03348 [1/]
Thank you @REasther for highlighting this influential work. One of the first papers I read as a student: astronomy.yale.edu/news/evol…
Replying to @REasther
This big paper has ~1500 citations but was published in an out of the way journal; putting it on the ArXiV makes it available to all at the click of a button... @TeresaTinsleyTx @SheerPriya @mgeha @YaleAstronomy @Knhannah @UCNZ_PhysChem @RKPriestley
A good read by @prappleizer on explicitly including coding as part of the Astrophysics undergraduate curriculum and some lessons learned.
Do you know a student-veteran? Come do summer research at @yale The deadline for the Research Experience for Veteran Undergrads (REVU) program is Feb 21st. @WSP_Vets Please spread the word: revuprogram.com/apply

It’s not every day that you get to speak with one of the country’s leading astrophysicists! The Rubicon team was given such an opportunity when @NateMorris interviewed Professor @mgeha, Yale astrophysicist and Rubicon @ClearConstell competition judge. 🔭

This course should be standard in an astrophysics undergraduate degree. I could not have done it without @prappleizer, but with materials below I feel confident to teach it again.
This semester, I had the exciting opportunity to co-write and co-teach a course with @mgeha at Yale. The core focus (we decided) was coding preparedness for research. I had a lot of ideas going in, and now that the semester has ended, I wanted to reflect on how it went.
Two personal favorites: code to read your Spotify playlist and suggest ambient sound/images. Code to play an improved version of battleship.

Thanks to the students and most importantly to @prappleizer for a great semester.

My latest piece: Selective college and universities should actively recruit and admit enlisted vets not because they are vets, but because they can meaningfully advance institutional goals in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Paper day! Juan Guerra developed a beautiful method to predict errors on the density profiles of resolved stellar systems. This project started while thinking about what science questions will (and will not) be answered by next generation telescopes. @LStrigari
Highlighting a new paper from one of our grad students Juan Guerra: “Forecasts on the Dark Matter Density Profiles of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies with Current and Future Kinematic Observations” thread below! arxiv.org/abs/2112.05166
Perfect article to read in a cozy coffee shop while thinking about new questions and projects related to ultra-faint galaxies. Nice work @bmutlupakdil and @denija83

@joshuadsimon and I reviewed dark matter constraints from low mass galaxies for @PhysicsToday. This field has some, er, history. Especially good for students entering the field:

eXtending the SAGA survey with machine learning. Congrats @jwuphysics

I am excited for this course and looking forward to learning alot.
I'm super excited to be co-writing and co-teaching a brand new Astronomy class with @mgeha this semester. We're focusing on practical research methods, with an explicit emphasis on programming and skills. If you, or your students would like to follow along.... 1/3

A week ago @zosiakrusberg and I helped run the first UChicago Warrior-Scholar Program STEM bootcamp week. The students, all of them active-duty service members or veterans, were amazing and inspiring. I can’t wait to see what they accomplish next. warrior-scholar.org/

We're wrapping up Day 2 of #AAS238 with a plenary talk by @mgeha about the "nieces, nephews, and niblings" of the Milky Way: low-mass satellite galaxies around Milky Way-like galaxies!

ALT Screenshot of a slide titled "Our Galaxy in Context: Satellite Galaxies Around the Milky Way and its Siblings." large image shows lots of small thumbnail images of many low-mass galaxies (they mostly look like small bluish blobs). Image credit reads "SAGA Survey satellite galaxies." The speaker is shown in an inset in the top right, and the bottom of the slide reads "Marla Geha (Yale)"
