I was honoured to accept the Esri President’s Award on behalf of the people of Jamaica. When Hurricane Melissa impacted Jamaica, GIS technology helped us answer critical questions: where help was needed most, which roads needed to be cleared, and how we could reach the people who needed support. Through real-time data and mapping, we were able to better understand the scale of the impact, guide critical decisions, and coordinate support during a time of national crisis. Jamaica’s response was not by chance; it was built on years of investment, training, and collaboration. This award belongs to our public officers, emergency responders, GIS professionals, community volunteers, our diaspora, and our international partners who supported Jamaica when we needed it most. As we rebuild, we remain committed to using innovation and technology to create a stronger and more resilient Jamaica.
