I'm really glad to see people posting about this. Pro-extinctionism is pervasive within Silicon Valley. These people literally want to initiate the next epoch in cosmic history--in which our biological species is kicked into the gutter, replaced by a new species of posthumans.
The anti-humans must be defeated. Anti-humanism: any social, political, or ideological process which subordinates humans to an allegedly superior authority, intelligence, or cause, and reduces human agency or wellbeing as a result. DOUTHAT: “You would prefer to see the human race endure, right?” THIEL: “Uh, I don’t know, I would, I would—“ DOUTHAT: “This is a long hesitation.” THIEL: “yes, but… transhumanism, the ideal was this radical transformation… We want you to be able to change your mind and change your whole body. These things don’t go far enough. You need to transform your whole self.”

As a frontier lab employee, I am EXTREMELY worried about AI killing us. Now, if it doesn't kill us & instead just makes employment impossible & deprives all intellectual labor of its fruits? You're each gonna get one fourteen-billionth of my equity. So what are you whining about?

This was so foreseeable (indeed my early prediction when ChatGPT came out) but a lot of tech people have a hard time understanding that the hypothetical enriching use of a tech loses out to the lazy corner cutting use 99.9% of the time theguardian.com/technology/2…

Complete non sequitur. We don’t need anything remotely close to AGI to automate most aspects of agriculture or garment manufacturing. The reason this sort of toil still exists is not because of insufficiently “smart” technology.
I strongly believe that everyone countersignaling against post-scarcity utopia on the basis of the "dignity" and "sanctity" of work should have do a lengthy stint as a Dhaka garments factory or African subsistence farmer. Talk is cheap from the air conditioned ivory tower.

Hot take: most people find some level of meaning in their work, and automating it for a marginal productivity gain is actually a net negative

While I spend most of every day working with LLMs and have managed to adapt to it so far, I would turn back the clock on this technology if it were within my power. I just see huge and diverse negative effects, while the positives are fewer, smaller, surprisingly incremental.

I don't usually agree with Republican officials. But yesterday, a group of eight state Attorneys General, including seven Republicans, sued OpenAI for endangering the American people through its reckless development of ChatGPT. Here is just some of what they said: The Arkansas Attorney General, Tim Griffin, argued that as safety concerns mounted, “OpenAI did not slow down. It held its foot on the gas, releasing increasingly powerful models without adequate safeguards or testing as growth and profits repeatedly took priority over safety.” The Montana Attorney General, Austin Knudsen, argued that OpenAI’s “revenues have come at great cost to the public, which has suffered irreparable harm—including lost loved ones, disturbing cyberattacks, and now a plausible threat of civilizational collapse.” The Iowa Attorney General, Brenna Bird, demanded a PAUSE on AI testing “until adequate safeguards are implemented to ensure that the tests do not pose a danger to the public.” They're right. If Big Tech Oligarchs are building a product that is threatening the safety of our children and all of humanity, they must be held accountable – no matter how rich and powerful they might be.

Dario may tell you he's saving humanity. And folks hiding behind avatars might scream progress and tell you to accept whatever is coming as inevitable, but friends, don't fall for any of it. We don't have to blindly accept/welcome this. Human agency/flourishing still matters.
This hacker news thread is absolutely heart-breaking. Whoever thinks “humans will find a way” ought I read it.

like i've been saying; if you think the popular opposition to "data centers" is bad now, just wait until people learn about the "AI successionism" / "worthy successor" / "biological bootloader for digital superintelligence" stuff.
I think most American voters would be surprised and alarmed if they learned that many leading Silicon Valley AI figures: 1) believe that AGI (artificial general intelligence, or the idea that AI that can pretty much do any cognitive task a human can, making it a substitute for human workers) is coming within the next few years, and that this is a very good thing, 2) believe that ASI (artificial superintelligence, or the idea of AI massively exceeding human intelligence) will follow shortly, perhaps even within a year or two of AGI, and that this is what we should actively strive for. Let’s leave aside whether these are remotely correct as predictions. But these really are clearly stated aims: indeed, it's OpenAI's founding mission, Meta named its division Superintelligence Labs, and one lab is literally called Safe Superintelligence Inc. Given voters’ stated preferences (72% already say they'd rather slow AI development than speed it up), if this information was truly widespread, I'm pretty sure they'd want to seriously tax compute in order to slow scaling. And if that’s the aim, a natural way to start that is by raising the cost of building new data centers. This doesn’t have to the be main policy tool, but can be a useful initial organizing tool. So in some ways, it's a actually remarkable that the anti-data-center movement reflects an emergent 'wisdom of the crowd' of sorts that seemingly exceeds the information possessed by most voters.

genuinely why dont you just quit if you legitimately believe you're 6 months out from death, and you think your company is building the death, why dont you quit im losing my mind
Chilling! An Anthropic researcher privately tells friends that we have 6 MONTHS LEFT until AI takes over. What's even more alarming is that reportedly this view is widespread among Anthropic employees. @Shaughnessy119 explains in his conversation with @arrington what an engineer from Anthropic told him over dinner: Tommy: "He's like, 'Yeah, I’m just enjoying my last six months.'" Arrington: “He was joking I hope, right?” Tommy: “No. No, he wasn’t.” Arrington: What? Arrington: “And he legitimately thinks that we have six months of life?” Tommy: “Not just him. Legitimately most people at Anthropic think that.” Later, the conversation turns to Sam Altman: Arrington: “I’ve known Sam a long time... He has exceptional charisma." Tommy: “Do you think he’s evil?” Arrington: “He’s evil. I believe he’s a psychopath.”

If you want to open a sandwich shop, food inspectors must first determine that it’s safe. If you’re a Big Tech Oligarch who builds an AI product that could threaten the human race? That product won’t be subject to 1 safety regulation. That’s insane. We must regulate AI — NOW!

tbh I’ll never be concerned with the sentiment of being “left behind” that pro-AI zealots love to parrot lol I don’t really wanna be where u are if that’s the future you’re seeking so don’t fight with me over it I’ll keep marching to the beat of my own drum just like I always do

the researchers at all the labs would tell you in private and sometimes in public that alignment has not been solved. if this is true, then racing into RSI is a folly that is unprecedented in world history. we will need to significantly slow the frontier of research very soon

Bumping this paper that came out at the end of last week. Anytime someone says "we can't stop AI," send them this!
I’m super excited this paper is finally out! It’s an epic 210 page analysis of whether a durable pause on frontier AI training is feasible. I think this will be the best plan by most people’s lights (although I’m still inclined to think we should get rid of the chips and fabs).

In general, it seems fairly obvious that public anti-AI sentiment will explode and become much more politically consequential if (i) an AI-related catastrophe causes loss of life or severe economic damage, (ii) significant AI-driven unemployment emerges, or (iii) the AI sector triggers a market crash, all of which seem plausible.
Scoop: Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event…They assume one in ‘27… axios.com/2026/10/09/ai-comp…
