Today we start to explain the metal-stack components. metal-hammer github.com/metal-stack/metal… is the minimal bootstrap OS image that every machine runs initially or during idle.
It's a go binary, packaged into an initramfs with Google u-root github.com/u-root/u-root
* gathers hardware information and reports to metal-api github.com/metal-stack/metal…
* configures BIOS&IPMI inband
* erases and format disks
* downloads OS image and burns it to disk github.com/metal-stack/metal…
* runs ignition script for the new OS
* boots into new kernel with kexec
