A college kid in a Spider-Man suit missed a field goal this morning and still walked off the field with $2 million.
His name is Carter. He's a biology student at BYU who wants to be a dentist, and he says he had no idea there was even a kicking contest when he showed up on campus this week.
The contest belongs to Pat McAfee, the former NFL punter turned ESPN host. Every Saturday on College GameDay, he picks one student out of the crowd and gives them a 33-yard kick for a pile of money. He started it back in 2023 to prove kicking is harder than it looks on TV, and for three seasons every dollar came out of his own pocket. ESPN puts that at more than $6 million to students and charities.
This year Home Depot started matching whatever Pat puts up, so the base prize went to $1 million a kick.
Then today happened. BYU hosts Notre Dame tonight, and Jazz owner Ryan Smith, a BYU guy, was standing right there on the set. Pat got him to throw in a million. Then he went after Smith's business partner Ryan Sweeney, who went to Notre Dame, and got him to pledge a million to charity on the same day his school plays BYU. Sweeney agreed, reluctantly.
So Carter hooks his first kick wide right. The crowd pretty much refuses to let it end there, Herbstreit lines him up again, and a knuckleball wobbles through the uprights. That's $2 million to him and $1 million to charity. The student section knocked down the barricades to get to him.
Here's what I keep thinking about. A 30-second Super Bowl ad cost about $8 million this year. Pat's contest has paid out roughly $8.5 million in seven Saturdays this season, and more and more of that money comes from Home Depot and whoever he can talk into it on air. For around the price of one Super Bowl commercial, he owns the loudest few minutes of college football every week.
It's paying off for him, too. Front Office Sports says the contest has taken over from Lee Corso's headgear pick as the show's signature moment. ESPN currently pays Pat $17 million a year to license his show, and he's reportedly in early talks on an extension that could top $60 million a year.
For three years Pat paid for this whole thing out of his own bank account. Today two guys in the crowd covered two-thirds of a $3 million prize just to be part of his bit.

Back to Back Championships. Played more baseball than any team these last couple years. Go win it all Brewers. At least let us lose to the new champions. Feels like that mavericks year with the Lakers. (Iβm not comparing the mavericks to the brewers. Strictly talking about going for a 3peat and getting swept)
Dodger fans. Itβs us against the league and every fanbase. They got what they wanted this year. Milwaukee vs Cleveland. How exciting.

A lot of people ask me if I only root for the #Dodgers because they hired my son 11 seasons ago... π€¦π½ββοΈπ
So sometimes you have to pull out receipts! I've been rocking with this team for decades! I sang my first anthem for them in 1987 (first season of 21 Jump Streetπ€― ) loooong before I was RJ's mom.
I love this team so much. They've brought so much joy & celebration to not just my son, but to their city, fan base, their families and so many people around the world especially Japan. Disappointing that we didn't get the 3Peete π but man I'm grateful to this ball club. 3 championships in 6 years πππ
More to come!
HUGE shout out to @JonSooHooPics π πΈ for capturing all of these iconic images for over 40 years! #gododgers
Not the outcome we wanted in the postseason - but this was absolutely the best moment of it all ππ€ #Dodgers
Canβt wait to see a rested, healthy Shohei back in 2027!!
