Crypto has primitives for creation (ERC-20) and liquidity (AMMs).
But there's no primitive for consolidation. That's not an oversight. It's a $40B design gap.
Here's why token mergers are inevitable infrastructure. 🧵

Back from Barcelona after a great few days at @EBlockchainCon 🇪🇸
Notably, almost every European bank and asset manager was present and is now actively exploring, building, or even acquiring across stablecoins, tokenization, and onchain financial markets infrastructure.
I joined leaders from @WhiteCase, @generaltensor, and @Stifel for a panel discussion to discuss IPOs and M&A activity in the European digital assets market.
Clear consensus that while IPO activity in Europe is lagging significantly behind the US (not only in crypto), the M&A market remains incredibly active, with payments, tokenization, and trading infrastructure among the most active verticals.
What has changed since prior years is that major financial institutions have doubled down on the industry through M&A or significant strategic investments, including most recently:
- @SPGlobal: acquisition of @OpenZeppelin & investment in @KaikoData
- @Mastercard: acquisition of @BVNKFinance
- @Nasdaq: investment in @krakenfx
Two forces are about to make token consolidation unavoidable:
Real-world assets coming on-chain with corporate actions that need settling.
And AI agents minting tokens faster than anyone can rationalize them.
The layer to handle both doesn't exist yet.
We're not building a merger app.
We're building the rails a dealmaking industry runs on.
One is a product while the other is a floor everything else stands on.
1/ This piece nails the consolidation wave, then asks exactly the right question: "what happens to the part of crypto that was never designed to be owned?"
Here's the answer. It's the tokens. And it's the biggest hole in the whole M&A story. 🧵

6/ "The market rewards revenue over tokens" is true today partly because tokens can't do what companies can. They can't consolidate.
You can't run M&A on an asset with no settlement layer underneath it.
1/ Every deal in traditional finance runs on four layers.
Crypto built three of them and skipped the one that makes the other three work. 🧵
5/ Crypto has originators, brokers, market makers, more liquidity infrastructure than Wall Street ever built.
It never built settlement for token-level deals.
We're not building a merger app.
We're building the rails a dealmaking industry runs on.
One is a product. The other is a floor everything else stands on.
6/ None of this is possible today. Not because the demand isn't there, but because the settlement layer underneath it doesn't exist.
