Cao revealed the number in written responses to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, confirming that eight sailors across the carrier and its accompanying ships tried to kill themselves during a deployment that kept the strike group at sea for more than six months straight, conducting a punishing pace of combat operations without a single port call for rest or resupply. One U.S. military official told CNN the number is alarming: "Eight attempted suicides is incredibly high," they said, noting typical carrier deployments see just one or two per year. "The strain of combat ops is much higher than normal deployments. No port calls, constant alerts, etc." It’s difficult to imagine what these poor sailors went through. Between 6,000 and 7,000 sailors were trapped on these ships for over half a year, enduring nonstop combat alerts, no breaks in friendly ports, and, according to one crew member who spoke with CNN, regularly failing basic amenities: toilets and water fountains frequently closed, hot water often unavailable. "Everyday we wake up and listen to our captain speak, we are desperately hoping and anxious for updates on our return," that sailor said. CNN previously reported two sailors jumped overboard during this deployment; both were rescued. Cao's letter confirms additional incidents: one sailor went overboard in early August and was recovered, another attempted to go overboard in March and was stopped by fellow sailors before being sent home for medical care. Despite all this, the Navy's public statements have insisted nothing unusual is happening. "We have not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship," a Navy spokesperson claimed, even as crew members told CNN morale was devastatingly low and mentions of self-harm among fellow sailors were common. This is the human cost of Trump's Iran war, a conflict that's dragged on nearly nine months past its promised "few weeks," with American service members trapped at sea, exhausted, isolated, and struggling, while officials publicly minimize the crisis unfolding right under their command.
